DEATH NOT CONFIRMED

Santo Domingo.-  A thick haze surrounded Dominican Republic’s opposition PRD party headquarters as hundreds of its rank and file tried to enter a meeting of the entity’s Political Commission by force, with at least one death origilnally reproted by local media, but later updated to serious condition.

Former PRD general secretary Orlando Jorge, had announced the death of Mejia suporter Socrates Ureña, from gunshot wounds, in addition to several people hurt.

The incidents prompted antiriot police to hurl dozens of tear gas canisters into the crowd, which dispersed to nearby streets.

Former president Hipolito Mejia headed a motorcade to PRD headquarters which surrounded the area, as police stood between them and the interior of the building.

Several injuries have been reported as the rival factions pushed and shoved in front of the building on the busy Churchill Av.

Spokesman for PRD president Wilfredo Alemany condemned the situation he affirms was cuased by Mejia, and acknowledged that they were overwhelmed by the event. “The country doesn’t deserve this, we didn’t foresee this turn of events.”

Mejia is a cancer and his belief that he can do no wrong is going to suck the country into a path of distruction for which the cure is just a painful as the cancer he spreads.

Many didn't pay attention to Hipoloco, when he forecasted: "politica de masas", which meant going back to the old days of resistance against Balaguer, when riots and strikes prevailed, and the country was under constant civil demonstrations and upheavals.
This latest show of civil disobedience gives a hint, of the Hipoloco plans, to demonstrate his disregard to the laws, his mounting disrespect of the present PRD authorities, and head on confrontation to the Danilo government.
Hipoco is a sore loser, and does not care to sink the DR into a state of civil disobedience. Maybe he is longing, for the DR authorities to arrest him for inciting riots.
Unless a firm stand is taken to put this "jefe de turbas' under a short leash, riots will continue and get worse and worse.

So far 10 wounded, and the Hipoloco supporters have taken the control of the PRD headquarters.
The police is trying to enter the building, and take control of the situation. Miguel Vargas was seeing exiting in a hurry, through the back entrance.
This latest attempt of civil disobedience, is a sorry spectacle of the usual PRD modus operandi.

And yet some here on DT actually wanted the PLD to lose the last National Elections!

What a National Tragedy that would have been!

Consolidation of Democratic processes and the Rule of Law are seldom established in such a small length of time. Arguably DR has ONLY witnessed approximately 10 years or so of democratic life since the Caudillo era ended with the last of the historical Caudillos, Balaguer, What happened in 1978 with the forceful political transition was engineered by outside pressure, namely President James Carter. And then again in the early 1990's under William Clinton. The machinations that brought the PLD to the Presidency was also a Cuadillo enterprise, and one can also say that Hipolito's victory was greatly aided by the last Caudillo's graces.

So it's only very recently that the DR has had any notion of life without a Caudillo and the political immaturity, as witnessed in the chaos of the PRD, is on live media for all to see.

Read some Dominican history and you'll see why DR is currently NOT being run in a Caudillo Era.

"Which is the worst PLD or PRD. (?) It is both a political and social tragedy that the voters have no other choices. "

It might be a social tragedy that voters don't have other choices, but those ARE THE FACTS.

Getting to Denmark takes a considerable time, and DR is barely out of the Caudillo Era politics. There are still some lingering issues-NO DOUBT, but in the main, the institutionalization of the democratic process is working itself through. As the technocrats gain greater strength, DR will show better institutional control. But it will take time. And of course, there's nothing written in stone, as the old expression states.

In our current era, the PLD has demonstrated itself to be a better organized and structured political machine. In 2016, Danilo will very likely hand over the Presidential powers to another PLD candidate.

If it were not for those from other countries bringing questions to the forefront...can you imagine what would be the oucome of these threads? The answer is what is happening within the PRD.

YOu must admit...those of Dominican blood...that it is pressure from the outside that is bringing the shit to the surface. Leave it to the country...and everything is ...A...OK.

It is OUTSIDE pressure and investment that is calling for reform and accountability...not those of the barrio who due to the limits of education imposed on them for many years...still vote based on who tossed the bigger chicken.

Josean...when you weed through the constant hatred...makes some valid points....but when asked about Moreno...backs off. This is no different than the PRD...PLD...PRSC...supporters here who spin whatever for whatever reason.

Fact is...the PRD have some serious internal issues to deal with if they are to be considered leaders of this country in the future/

Miguel Vargas (La careta) and (wussy) Leonel Fernandez probably got together on this, to get rid of HIppopotamo.

That way the two of them can play politics with the country for the next 20 years.

Buying and selling the country to each other.

Open your eyes people, unite against Leonel cumming back for more, and against Vargas getting away with this.

i see a very sad scenario on the horizon. Danilo is . from all appearances, a well meaning guy. he is a guy with good breeding, and not from the same chopo class as Leonel, and Miguel Vargas. sadly, his efforts are going to be sabotaged by two factors. firstly, the old guard is not going to give up the feeding trough without a fight. they want to get their hands on the purse strings, at least one more time. they are going to work behind the scenes to make sure that the reforms that Danilo tries to institute meet with very limited success, if any at all. secondly, the economy is going to implode, and bring about social unrest and disillusionment. as is normal of human behavior, the blame is going to be laid at the feet of Danilo, which will give the opening for the return of King Leonel. all you need to do is to read the postings in this site to realize that the perception level of the rank and file Dominican is subterranean, in regard to politics.

look at the number of morons here, like victor, who would be ecstatic to see Leonel return. so, just like people were willing to give an abject disgrace like HipolIto a second turn at the wheel, they will give Leonel a third. the country will , effectively, live on in a state of inertia. they will build malls, and have Starbucks, and Burger King, and Ikea. simpletons like those will call that progress. meanwhile, the reforms that Danilo wanted to institute will be forgotten. the 4% for education will be allocated, but will be used to build spectacular school buildings, complete with the kickbacks to political enablers. they will be populated by principals who can barely read, but have the proper familial and social connections. it is not pretty, folks. meanwhile, the people will be kept happy with news reports that we have the biggest and best of everything. we get more tourists than everybody else, every year. tell that good news to Puerto Plata.

" ....why work? work is hard!"

You are absolutely right, Dready, but there are some very rare exceptions.

" too many people want a caretaker, a provider, a captain, a leader, and a provider."

Perhaps you should have included "a Hatian to do the hard or dirty work"?

It still begs the question, "why is it so?" The Catholic Church teaches that eternity in heaven comes not from good deeds, study or hard work, but from blind faith in Jesus and the church. The Evangelical Church teaches you don't even need wait till you die to have miracle cures and financial windfalls, however tithing is mandatory.
