Santo Domingo.- Justice minister Francisco Domínguez on Tuesday slammed criticized that for more than 20 years law enforcement agencies’ policy of "cronyism" for giving weapons to politicians and businesspersons , to befriend them and get favors in return.
He said even when many of those weapons are used for protection, it’s also the military and police’s method to gain their acceptance.
Dominguez said the weapons handed out range from pistols to machine guns. "As we see in political conflicts, many are weapons of war and of all calibers, and in any type of dispute with officials and former officials."
Speaking in the conference "Citizen Security in the Dominican Republic" hosted by the U.S. Foreign Security Advisory Council, the official stated his concern with weapons are becoming a culture and a symbol of progress.
Disarmament
The Justice Minister affirmed that he favors tighter controls on the possession of firearms, adding that if had his way he would ban their use.
Response
Armed Forces minister Sigfrido Pared on Wednesday announced he ordered the chiefs of Staff of the Army, Navy and Air Force to inventory any additional weapons assigned to military who work in the security of civilians, to determine if they should be returned.

The country is awash with all kinds of guns, in the wrong hands. Any small town politico, has his collections of machine guns, and all kinds of military weapons assigned to him, like they where casabes.
It is like a fashion fad, for those in power in DR, to parade their guns, as a cock walks in defiance.
That's why it is unreasonable and an abuse of power, to try to make it still more difficult, for civilians to own licensed firearms, to alter the balance of the scale, to protect their life and property.

Hope no one here is surprised by these revelations. It's been going on for years, and it's sort of become accepted as salami.
If you look at the root cause, it relates to the fact that we are just not an honest society, and anything short of a morally transformational revolution would not redress the sad state of affairs in all aspects of our society. Improved education and economic status would not solve it; in fact, it might just help expand the extent of corruption. Look, some of the people perpetrating the big thievery are among the highest educated in DR-LF, and Mr. Vargas immediately come to mind.
Josean, please help me out with a few notable others.

The government spends RD$1.04 Billion pesos, on Haitian illegals health care.
How many Dominicans are in need of that money?
How many Dominican would benefit if that money is spent on education?
How many Dominicans would benefit if that money is spent on their health care??
How many Dominicans would put food on their tables ??
How many bridges would be build in DR??
How many roads paved??
How many schools build??
How many houses build??
How many hospitals ??
How many Kilo Watt of energy produced??
How many dams build??
How many canals for irrigation??
How many docks??
These are the kind of thing some people don't want to understand.
The Dominican Republic is a very poor country.
We cannot have the luxury of spending that kind of money on the health care of illegal Haitians, while our own people are in need of those funds.

What has the problems of the mayor of Central Sd got to do with the President ..The money is handed over each year from the government to the various municipalities through an agency headed by Aristy ,,but the spending of the money is the responsibility of the municipalities who at present are mainly controlled by PRD members

RD is following the US 'macho man gun obsession', and is paying the price. And it will continue to get worse in RD as long as more and more men roam around with guns tucked into their pant waists, and respond to situations with guns.
Look at the mayor of Cabarete. He was standing on the sidewalk one day, and took several shots at a passing vehicle that he felt went by too close to his parked vehicle. He hit the vehicle 3 times, and nothing was done, as usual. Just what RD needs, more guns!!!!!!!!!!!!!
