Santo Domingo.- Las Americas Airport Customs agents on Wednesday seized three firearms and military gear from a U.S. citizen who tried to smuggle them into the country, from New York city.
The authorities identified the suspect as Carmine Emmanuel Coppola, 24, who lives in the town Salinas, Bani (south).
Coppola brought the weapons hidden in a false bottom suitcase covered with clothes and other personal items, the authorities said, and include a Glock 40 mm pistol, a 12 gauge shotgun and a Mossberg 22 rifle, all with extra magazines and ammo.
The Customs preliminary report said the foreigner tried to bribe several Customs employees after they detected the weapons inside the luggage.

American is still technically a free country. You do not o through immigration or customs to leave.
It is a crime that the D.R. is violating this man's right to bear arms as he see's fit.

might be a free country, but you still have to declare them as being in your luggage. I do not think that someone hiding guns is likely to declare at the other side. Given the technology present in New York airports...I would say he had a connection to get these through.

Simple than that. He declares the firearms in NY as he was supposed to do with the airlines. The airline employee, inspects that they are unloaded, and checks the luggage in. The airlines follows procedure and advises customs in DR.

Because NY morons don't catch perpetrators while concentrating on law-abiding citizens.
I previously packed checked-in bag with rear shock absorbers for my car. Got to the DR, no prob.
Two months later packed front shock absorbers. Went through hell having to find someone to hold them for me when I was told "you can not take this." PROHIBITED was the word. This was checked-in luggage, not carry-on, both times. Had to leave them in NY and almost missed the flight.
Same thing with luggage allowance (venting here) sometimes ONE pound over triggers "I want yo' money" attitude, sometimes don't. There is no consistent application of rules, which allows for scumbags to get away (or think they can get away) with things like bringing guns into the DR.
My opinion (regardless of moron issues) be vigilant and don't allow guns to be brought into already volatile, crime-ridden, environment in the DR.

I'm surprised he wasn't arrested in NYC. The handgun for sure without a permit which is next to impossible to get is a felony violation.
The airline/TSA requirements are straight forward to apply with air travel. But certain areas - NYC being the toughest causes most problems for travelors. In NYC airports when you decare/notify airline of weapon transport they normally call over a cop and if no NYC permit you are arrested. If you don't declare weapon carriage TSA should find it and contacts authorities and will not let bag fly straightened out. Now federal and city laws violated.
I have a concealed carry permit which is good for most states except NYC. If I have a connecting flight in NYC from a place my gun is legal to another place my gun is legal it is fine as long as I never touch the checked bag with the weapon while in NYC.

Without US involvement, the rest of the countries opposing the Nazis would not have had the strength or the arms or the feet on the ground to defeat Hitler. This ignorant jealousy is just pathetic.

Correct
In fact Australians fired the first shots in both WW1 and WW2, despite being on the other side of the world. The USA on the other hand sat on the fence until it was actually attacked. Australia has done more than our share in fighting for the west in Korea, Vietnam, East Timor, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. etc.
Australia needed assistance from USA when attacked by Japan, since most of our troops were in Europe and North Africa fighting against Hitler and the Axis forces, despite not being in immediate danger from them.
