Sobeida Felix, Leavy Y. Nin Batista, Jose Figueroa A., Miguel Vargas M.
Santo Domingo.- The suspicions that Puerto Rican kingpin Jose Figueroa Agosto had close ties with leading politicos and business leaders could materialize, with accounts by local media that Miguel Vargas Maldonado, president of Dominican Republic’s major opposition party (PRD) received money from the convict.
PRD spokesman Wilfredo Alemany announced a statement to be issued by Vargas in the coming hours, in response to allegations by Figueroa’s paramour Sobeida Felix, that her lover gave the former PRD presidential candidate US$300,000 and a SUV.
In her first deposition filed in March 2011, Felix said the Puerto Rican drug lord dined three times with Vargas in 2008, during his presidential campaign.
She said the first donation of money was during a private dinner at the home of Joani Fermin, in the gated community of Los Pinos, where in addition to the hostess and her husband, Paul Egan, were present Figueroa’s wife, Leavy Nin Batista, Figueroa and herself.
She said that night Figueroa gave him US$100,000 in cash and $200,000 more and a Mitsubishi Montero SUV afterwards, during other dinners held at the Puerto Rican drug lord’s home.
Alemany told diariolibre.com and elnuevodiario.com.do that he’s awaiting Vargas' statement to release it to the media Sunday afternoon.
Figueroa is being held in New York on drug trafficking charges and a murder conviction.

Felix also revealed that Figueroa gave thousands of dollars and expensive watches to retired Police major generals José Luis Domínguez Castillo and Luis Darío de la Cruz Consuegra, and to retired colonel Adolfo Sanchez Perez.

Like this is nothing new. LF took all kinds of drug money donations as does the rest of our corrupt government. While the entire world went through a fiscal crisis we did very well for the most part. Anyone ever wonder why? The drug trade is not effected so much by the crisis in fact more drugs are taken when people are depressed over money.
Remember now even seeing the facts and hearing the truth we will have denial and eventually everyone will forget. Vargas will never be held accountable or have to turn that money in. LF never had to account for his new wealth but one day we will find out the truth.

Both major parties received received "donations", very "open handed" from dubious symphatizers. Figueroa Agosto did get placed on the PLD shit list, because of his monetary contributions to the PRD, who he thought was going to win the elections. This was a "faux pas" on his part, because the PLD corrupt demanded much more money, than their PRD counterparts.
There seems to be a very well orchestrated effort to leave the PRD headless, and contribute to the division of this out of sync political party, that has failed to solve their inner disputes.
With the publication of Sobeida's deposition, the "coup d'grace" is being delivered to the remaining pillars of the PRD, with the intent to cause an irrevocable split, and break up of their status as a major political party, same way they did to the PRSC, after Balaguer croaked.

All the PLD need do is capture a 25%-30% share of the PRD's disillusioned with their party's leadership and a near monopoly governing machine, a la PRI in Mexico or Japan's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) which have dominated for large periods of time in their respective nations will become reality in DR.
These last three election cycles could very well portend many more in future for the purple party.
Josean and others will not like it, but this process is well on its way to being "institutionalized" as the only other major party is in ruins at the moment.

If this is what he gave to the PRD, imagine how much he gave to those in power who allowed him to operate unhindered for so many years.
The good thing for both the PLD and PRD is that, as always, the truth will never be known.

Veronica: it is very rarely that I disagree with you but this time I must.
Please, don't believe for one second the myth perpetuated by those in power.
While the rest of the world went through the fiscal crisis, WE WENT IN THE CRAPPER. We did worse than most of the world, not better.
Our economy is in shambles, there are no jobs, and if it weren't for our fading ability to draw tourists, we would be no better off than Haiti.
Our unemployment is much higher than we are told. Our education system is in shambles. Our infrastructure is crumbling, and most importantly there is no leadership, just a bunch of greedy pigs looking to get rich at the expense of everyone else.

juanb, i just read today that 90% of all the applicants for the new Community College in Santo Domingo failed the mathematics segment of the test. if that was not bad enough by itself, 70% failed the Spanish
segment. something has to be done, and fast.. now, everyone is all happy about the prospects of inviting teachers from Spain to come here and teach Dominican teachers. that should have been done 30 years ago. know why? 52:1, that's why. that is the Euro exchange rate. even if the DR is paying teachers 30,000 pesos per month, which i doubt, does anyone realistically believe that experienced teachers are going to come here from Spain to work for 600 Euro per month?

Let's get Castro to lend us some of his teachers. They run their classes like training camps. I hated all my Cuban teachers, but I have to admit that I learned a lot thanks to them.

classes are supposed to be run like training camps. that is the only way to maintain order. a survey of schools in Latin America showed that 15% of all class time is wasted by teachers trying to restore discipline. when you start with very few hours per day, you cannot afford to waste 15% of it

My feeling is Sobeida is hiding much loot and she wants to secure it before someone finds it. Probably in the walls of a stash house. Probably buried late at night behind some campo shack.

Danilo and Dready I agree with both of you on that score.
And to make it clear what the alternative would be to not following school rules: a nice video playback with a few knucklehead youths cutting Sugarcane in the fields would drive up flagging interest for those youngsters in need of a pick me up. LOL

So the democratic Party has won 3 straight National Elections in the USA?
The situation is ripe for the continuation of the PLD in power. Danilo Medina has a solid and good 4 years and with the disarray in the PRD, the PLD picks up say 10-15% of their members and thus creates a Super Majority Party. Josea will never get over this coming sequence of defeats upon defeats.
I hear the religious orders are taking members.

yes, just the perfect ingredient to help the DR on the road to democracy. a party with no opposition. only the genius of Atabey could come up with such crap. it is a pity that the 4% for education cannot save him from semi literacy.
