Santo Domingo.- Legislators from border provinces yesterday proposed that the Dominican Government join Haiti’s initiative to build a wall to separate the two countries, as the latter is doing at the community of Carrizal, Elías Piña (west), and extend the dividing line between the island’s two nations.

Haiti’s Government builds a wall at the border to control the entry of, and collect taxes on merchandise from Dominican Republic, whose lawmakers legislators suggest extending the construction so the Government can control illegal migration.

Barahona province senator Eddy Mateo said the work by Haiti is an opportunity for both countries to agree and build a wall which defines the border line dating back to 1929 and ratified by the 1936 Treaty.

He said conflicts between Dominicans and Haitians often lead to attacks on agents assigned to the border. "It’s now time to reach a bilateral understanding between the two sides which puts an end to that situation, Dominican Republic must demand respect, because there’s much shenanigans and blackmailing by the Haitian Government and its authorities and we must protect with blood and guts what has cost us so much sacrifice to achieve our independence."

Independencia province senator Juan Orlando Mercedes said the Government should first investigate the real reason behind the wall’s construction, because the relations between the two countries have been satisfactory.

He said however that this is a good opportunity for the Dominican Government support the wall, but with five gates, one at each border province, and build a wide highway along the wall, to strictly control illegal migration he affirms takes place every day at the border.

For Pedernales senator Dionis Sánchez, the wall poses an opportunity to clearly define the situation between the two nations.

"I'd like to know the opinion of international organizations that permanently live condemning us and that Haiti has erected a wall unilaterally without consulting the Government, I would like to know their opinion."

So, at least now the fog of reporting is cleared that this construction is called a wall at border, not the wailing wall as previously reported by DT. Have to ask why Dominican Customs and Immigration offices are 8 kilometers away from the border ? I know, I know, they don't know where the border is at !!!!

It goes to show that the Haitian government does not care about the International community to execise what I think is right in their territory(just like every man has the right to do anything in his house) just like the US is doing building the biguest wall in the western hemisphere, so my question is; should we care what anybody says about the way we run our country?

josean,

I must agree with you on this one. Just start building the wall along side the Haitian Government instead of given inflammatory comments. More doing...less taking.

So let me try to figure this out; our economy is about 100 Billion US Dollars a year, so we get 30 Billions in hand out. What a blantant garbage comment.

So should we build gas chambers as a "Final Solution to our Haitian Problem?"

If that's what you want: DONE!

That has been my solution all along. The dr needs to take this serious and do as the americans are doing with mexico and built a solid 20ft high wall along the entire border. keep gates or border crossings at all major towns for trade and legal immigration both ways, build a road along side the border with check points 15 miles from each other, invest in 2 or three helicopters and finally find work for the dominican army. not even this will stop the haitians from cossing but it will reduce the numbers drastically.

josean,

I'm confused now!. So you are against the Haitian building a wall? Or Dominicans building a wall?? or against any wall? You know...."Good fences make good neighbours." -- (old adage)

yes, haiti begin the wall because we are tired about the dominican people.
a little country of german nazi is near us.

i think the real friend of haiti is venezuela.
we can work with venezuela and ecuador to have a great army.
haiti have to cut the relation with dominican country.

How weir is it, that haiti is the one building a wall? Perhaps we must take the opportunity and follow their lead. After all who can call us racist if they started it?

This is good news an all fronts, Our country is heading in a positive direction economically at the moment. It will be a huge deal if the border issue can be solved, a wall is the perfect solution. I think we should be funding a construction project to build another wall on the eastern portion of the border. I mean if the Haitian government took the first step, we should take advantage and help them out. It will halt illegal trade, tax evasion, human trafficking, and illegal immigration.. And in addition it the construction of a wall will create hundreds of jobs..

Jajajajaja, I love it!!
If it was us who started building the wall, you've seen Haitians protesting everywhere.
We Dominicans need to give a helping hand and build our own walls well. Our wall must be parallel to that of the Haitians, making sure both don't touch. After all we know the Haitian “modus operandi”, today they build the wall tomorrow they will up rise and bring it down.

Its very normal to feel superior to a nation that has been through hardship like Haiti, however what if the situation was reversed? However if we look at the history of the island we will see why the Spaniards gave the eastern part of the island to the French, because it was mountainous and was not agriculturally friendly as the western part. However now we face a different type of situation now! Its called GLOBAL WARMING, Haiti has the mountains, the Dominican Republic has most of the flat lands, I saw a map of the situation that will take place within 35 years for the the island of Hispaniola and I can tell you the Dominican Republic will lose one third of its land and Haiti will be the largest part of the island because of its mountains. So lets stop being so hateful towards our neibourgh some day we may need them for our survival! God is love not Hate!
