Probe into soldier’s killing by NYC police a big win for Dominican mom

New York.- In what is shaping as a big win for Cecilia Reyes, mother of National Guard reservist Noel Polanco, killed by a NY police detective in Queens last year, federal prosecutors have launched an investigations into the case.

Polanco was fatally shot near La Guardia Airport while in his car accompanied by two women giving them a ride home.

The detective Hassan Hamdy who was on his way to a another scene, responding to a call of a robbery, allegedly saw Polanco driving "erratically" on the Grand Central Parkway and stopped him.

Hamdy said when he approached Polanco’s vehicle to ask him for the registration and driver’s license, the 22-year-old soldier, "ducked" to grab ”something ” which in his view, "could’ve been a weapon."

It was then when the detective shot Polanco in the chest of and according to witnesses, pulled him out of the vehicle as he was dying.

The Queens Office of the District Attorney subsequently convened a grand jury, which found probable cause against indicting and the detective to stand trial.

The announced probe caps Reyes’ months-long campaign for justice together with civil rights attorney Sanford Rubinstein.
