Think tank says Police stop Haitians’ offspring from lodging complaints

Santo Domingo.- The think tank Centro Bonó on Thursday denounced that since early morning police agents have kept dozens of Dominicans of Haitian descent and sugarcane workers from reaching the offices where the Inter-American Human Rights Commission (IACHR) hears their complaints.

The organization said the agents preventing the people from reaching the Santo Domingo State University clubhouse on the Malecon, to file their grievances with the IACHR delegation against the Constitutional Court ruling they say violates their civil and political rights.

"In light of this new violation, the Centro Bonó asks the police and the Office of the Prosecutor carry out its duty to ensure order and safety at the place chosen by the Commission to develop its process to compile cases," the NGO said.

It adds that the arbitrariness of a couple of agents shouldn’t be allowed to hinder the work of an international agency such as the Commission, “much less the quest for justice by nationals and immigrants.”
