Santo Domingo.- For the second time in his career, Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez, known for his razor sharp rebukes of even senior political leaders, is among the prelates who could succeed the resigning Pope Benedict the 16th.

Though considered among the Catholic Church’s most conservative voices,  Lopez is also know for his defense of unpopular causes, such as his staunch stance against abortion.

Also mentioned as possible replacements of Pope Joseph Ratzinger, who announced he will leave the papacy Feb. 28, are the cardinals from Argentina, Colombia, Belgium India, Brazil, Honduras and Brazil, Austria among others.

Lopez Rodriguez was also eligible to replace John Paul II, who was replaced by Ratzinger.

Maybe the good cardinal will be elected pope, and he can take the pistol he carries, and the rank of DR major general to the vatican, and arm for real the Vatican guards.
I hope cardinal Nicky is elected, for the good of the DR, although rumor is pointing to an African pope.

In the countless articles posted online regarding considerations and front-runners for a new Pope, this is the one and only news source that mentions this Cardinal as even a second thought consideration for Pope. All Cardinals are "eligible" to be Pope as well as all people are "eligible" to bat clean-up for the New York Yankees.

The cardinal ate humble pie at the airport when he was traveling to the US in 2004. He had to remove his shoes, jacket, and belt for airport security, he was not a happy camper.

His behavior then and most possibly now is not a qualification for the papal crown.

Let's hope he has the capacity to elect a worthy successor.

Devin,

How have you been my distinguished brother?

I doubt that any Latin American would be a serious contender since the Catholic Church already has a Monopoly in that region. As to a Black African Pope, maybe since the market share in that continent is not major, but that racism factor is a very hard thing to overcome especially for North American and European Catholics.

I really feel that the more paramount and possible reason for his early departure from power is that the current Pope wants to leave his conservative imprint by influencing the selection of a protégé who is adherent to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

In that vein Cardinal Peter Kodwo Appiah Turkson, President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, Archbishop emeritus of Cape Coast (Ghana) could have a long shot!

The good cardinal was seeing by reputable eyewitnesses waving a gun, at some squatters that had a small shack in a donated lot of his domain. Now sold to an investor group.
Also he does hold the rank of major general and this can be researched in the armed forces website, where his name is listed. I do believe that he also gets a regular salary from his military rank.
If the vatican knows this information, I would guess that they do have some type of sugar coated knowledge. But after all the resigning nazi pope was a member of the Hitler youth, as well as an armed prison guard of Nazi camps.

I know the question was directed at the general, dread, but yes, he and a couple of prelates more have the rank and have the option to a gun and bodyguards. The "military chaplancies" was one of the shameful conditions the country was forced to swallow once Trujillo signed the blasted Concordat with the Vatican. :-(

I think in the last papal scrutin, the African lost by a very narrow margin!!!

Josean,

I hope you too are well my brother. I read an article on the African Cardinals mentioned for Pope. Cardinal Turksan is too young, if you can imagine 64 being too young. I don't think they would elect a pope that could be in power for 25 or so years, especially a black one who is not known for his steadfast conservative theology. The church has not ever been that "enlightened", sad to say. If they do chose an African Pope, Cardinal Arinze may be a better bet to get the nod. At 80-years-old he can help secure a large share of the African flock without the concern of a long tenure. I think there will be for the first time a non-European Pope and that it will be Cardinal Ouellet, who is also young for the post at 68 but has all the conservative bonafides, including his belief that abortion is a moral crime, even for victims of rape. He is the prefect of the powerful Congregation of Bishops, which has secured him a fair amount of inside relevance, for sure.

"Quickest off the mark was the Irish bookmaker Paddy Power, which has already gone through three favorites for the position, starting off with Nigerian Cardinal Francis Arinze, before shifting to Ghanaian Cardinal Peter Turkson and then to Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet — who at the time of this writing is the most favored option, with odds of 11 to 4. A rival bookie, Ladbrokes, currently has Turkson as the slight favorite at 3 to 1, followed by Arinze (7 to 2) and then Ouellet (4 to 1)."

"Bookmakers are also taking bets on the next Pope’s country of origin: the current favorite is Italy at 6 to 4, followed by any African country (2 to 1) and anywhere in South or Central America (10 to 3). (The United States, a long shot, comes in at 12 to 1). A market has also been opened on what name the future Pontiff will take; Peter is the 2-to-1 favorite."

Until one understands that Jesuits of the fourth order (the most powerful military order on the planet - by far) control the Vatican (the most powerful institution/country on earth - by far) , most comments on forums like this are moot . If you are of the curious type and want to get a much different take on religion and politics ... Google or Bing ; "Vatican Assassins" , there is a free pdf book by Eric Jon Phelps and a great website he started . I'm not the only one who ends up saying "I had no idea" !

From the Dominican Republic - where's that again - sounds like somewhere in Latin America?
My money's on Brazil given the number of Catholics there and the threat from the charismatic evangelical churches.
