Opposition leader rebukes his companion’s “barbarism and disorder”

Santo Domingo.- The president of Dominican Republic’s major opposition party (PRD) on Friday said the handover of its national headquarters marks the difference between those who "act according to law, respect and democratic rule, and those who act based on barbarism and disorder."

Miguel Vargas said he was receiving the national headquarters on behalf of the PRD family, “for the rule of law, after the assault, destruction, theft and looting it was subjected to, in an act of barbarity unprecedented in the history of Dominican political differences."

As he toured the premises, Vargas announced the immediate reconstruction of vandalized areas and replacement of equipment and materials looted on January 27, "when former president Hipolito Mejia led the violent disruption of a peaceful meeting of the National Executive Committee."

Vargas spoke after Police general Nelson Rosario handed control of the premises over to a committee of senior PRD leaders, with a team of Certified Public Accountants as witnesses.
