Even 5-star general Rafael Trujillo was retired...
Santo Domingo.- A whopping 159 general officers, of which 59 serve no function, face retirement, promotion or continue getting paychecks as active members in Dominican Republic’s military branches, many of whom should know their fate tomorrow Wednesday, February 27, after president Danilo Medina’s Administration starts the traditional deluge of decrees with designations and substitutions.
Around 100 colonels who also have no official function in the military also face possible retirement. Of the generals 38 belong to the Army, including 10 major generals and 28 brigadiers; seven admirals of the Navy, while the Air Force has five major generals and nine brigadiers.
With the rank of general figure four former ministers of the Armed Forces without function but still active, while a source quoted by elnuevodiario.com.do revealed that Medina will place the senior military officers on retirement.
Several of those who face retirement were seen at military headquarters on Monday, some military who are supposed to be retired, among them former Navy chief Nicolás Cabrera Arias, Gil Ramirez and Apolinar Disla, and others.
Many of the senior officers seek to keep their stars by forging ??"ties" with legislators, cabinet officials and political leaders, as insurance against “mothballing the uniform.”

Would Rick and the other defenders of Leonel and his greatness please explain to us proletariat how such a great mind and ruler allowed this mess to be perpetuated at such a great social and economic cost to the nation?
If Leonel was so beloved and capable, then perhaps he possessed the political capital to have terminated this characteristic "bannana republic" practice of keeping around this useless bunch ov overweight, inept, corrupted, uneducated and drug-pushing leeches; yet, he didn't do diddily squat about it, and may have made it worse than what he inheritied.
I hope it is true that maybe 100 will be retired; however, I wonder why it is not more like 140. We don't need that many generals, especially when they have no clearly defined tasks; more importantly, when they didn't earn those hideous metals and are encapable of military leadership of any kind.

It has been the way of the DR for decades abd LF did not correct the situation , probably because his interest was in building up the country with industry and infrastucture , rather than looking at retired generals ,,,but he should have deputised someone ...Danilo seems to be more interested in details of un necessay expenditure ..so it has been a good handover of power

We can only hope this is the beginning of a drastic reduction in the size of the armed forces.
Certainly hope these leaches and parasites aren't replaced with more of the same.
Those retired must be excluded from any political or governmental functions. A moratorium on promotions can be enacted for those left active, and will be gradually retired at their present rank until the country has a manageable size in the military.
The future generation of officers must be graduates of a higher institution. The better the education earned, the higher the rank given. Exclude all illiterates across the board.

Agreed. You come into office and have a very short time to have an impact on the future. You need therefore to pick your fights carefully. Yes, it would have been nice to see many of these buffoons sent into early retirement, but at what cost?

The Generals and Coronels don't matter as much as the prosecutors, and Domingo and the PG for Sto Domingo are doing a fine job so far, and apparently with the blessing of Danilo. The DR will slowly evolve into the first world. Yes everyone expectshe Bermudez, Leones/Fernandez, their retirement, their payments, their premios for walking the line. I don't deny them that actually, they were just doing what they were told, and doing what had always been done. But changes must be made. The DR will forever be governed by the uber-rich. The Fanjuls, the Corripios, the many others. It's just the way it is. Pretty much like the rest of the world, however you want to slice it. Am I wrong? I'm open to opposing opinions.

It would seem this is a monkey on the back of the country who will continue to pay salaries of the retired along with the security forces that will guard them for life. The is at least a battalion of troops who will be getting paid to do servant work. It is like we have 159 former Presidents that require secret service protection along with administration and "office" expense for life. No end in sight unless the government reins in this abuse, who promotes all these people any way
From: Dominican Republic
The job could be made very easy, audit and asset test every single one of them (including family members), if there are any irregularities the task is made simple... fire them, no pension, no guards, remove ALL assets and jail if needed...
Then lets see how many are left??
