Santo Domingo.- Swedish furniture giant Ikea has included the Dominican Republic in the list of countries where it has pulled its meatballs from sale over fears that the popular food could contain horsemeat.
The Ikea-label meatballs have now been pulled from stores in 24 countries, including the Dominican Republic, Hong Kong and Thailand in addition to the host of European countries announced recently.
Ikea spokeswoman Ylva Magnusson said it is an important product for the company, "so the measure is significant but we don’t want our clients to worry." She said a German laboratory was currently testing the meatballs for traces of horsemeat, with the first results expected on Thursday.
Last week Ikea said that it had withdrawn the meatballs from sale in 16 European countries after Czech authorities found horsemeat in the product.

as nothing much in Ikea is the real thing ,the chances are that meat balls follow the same pattern.

Give horsemeat-tainted food to poor - German minister
Germany's development minister has suggested that horsemeat mislabelled as beef should be distributed to the poor.
Dirk Niebel said he supported the proposal by a member of the governing CDU party, and concluded: "We can't just throw away good food."
I'm with you Dream, send the stuff over, the Haitian and poor Dominicans could only dream about such a bounty in comparison to our domestic "salami" LOL

Better horse meat than no meat.
Horse meat is healthier than most other meats, including cow.
Let's have those meat balls.
As long as it is not rat meat, I think we will survive and get stronger.
We eat lots of Salchichon, and don't even know what they put in there.
However, I will certainly not eat Salami, mind you.
LOL

Yes, zonyk157,
but only wealthy Dominicans can afford mass-produced Ikea furniture made from particle-board.
The rest have to make do with hand-made solid mahogany furniture, from ancient trees felled in the middle of the night in national wilderness reserves.
