Washington.- U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey)  today denied media reports that he interceded on behalf of a friend and political donor who is now the target of an FBI probe on alleged Medicare fraud,  EFE reports.

Speaking for Hispanic media, the lawmaker referred to media allegations of a possible ethics violation to favor Dominican-born eye doctor Salomon Melgen, whose West Palm Beach, Florida, offices were raided earlier this week by federal authorities.

Menendez said he contacted the authorities of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which administer health services for the elderly, retirees and poor people, to clarify the rules for health providers. "We expressed concerns about the policies and ambiguity that make it difficult for medical providers understand them."

In today's conference, U.S. Senate majority leader, the Democratic Harry Reid, said the Senate Ethics Committee is reviewing Medicare-related charges against Menendez, but noted that he has “full confidence" in him.

According to an article in the Washington Post, Menendez contacted health services authorities twice since 2009 in connection with an audit to determine whether Melgen had charged the government an excess of 8.9 million dollars for care in his Florida clinics.

The newspaper, citing his office advisers, says Menendez "complained to the manager in charge of Medicare payments that it was unfair to penalize the doctor (Melgen) because the rules on claims were ambiguous."

Menendez, 59, is the most prominent Hispanic in the Democrat-controlled Senate, which has selected him as chairman of the powerful Foreign Relations Committee.

His friendship with Melgen has catapulted his name to national headlines after revelations the senator flew twice to Dominican Republic aboard the doctor's private plane.

Last week Menendez had already discarded reports that he had sex with prostitutes in Dominican Republic, but admitted having traveled to that country in Melgen’s plane.

In Dominican Republic, Melgen reportedly obtained a 20-year contract worth millions, with a company which operate X-ray machines for container inspections at major ports.

This all bogus...........I don't believe a word.

The FBI still has not brought forth formal charges against Dr. Melgen and he still is not sure
why he was targeted for a raid. Although medicaid fraud is the number one crime in
the South Florida, I doubt he would have put himself in such position. He has
too much too lose and not enough to gain.

All of the previous criminals caught had little to no roots in the area and opened up business solely for the intent of scamming the government. The offer of health services to the community was not part of the agenda. Contrary to Dr Melgen who for years ran a reputable practice and was highly regarded in his professional circles. Unfortunately, in the very end they are likely going to find something. If you look hard enough, some over zealous FBI agent will dig up some dirt. No one is perfect, everyone can make an untentional mistake, but it wont be for fraud. I can tell you that.

I have tons of family members living in FL and from their stories it seems that all doctors in FL are corrupt, so I wouldn't doubt this. Patients tend to get kickbacks from their procedures while medicare foots the bill.

"Menendez is going down"

You guys have cooked the goose a bit too soon, wait until something solid comes about. There is absolutely nothing that can substatiate his guilt.

You guys forget each statement against him must be proven without a "reasonable doubt." For now it is only an allegation and some allegations are made "on information and belief" if the person making the statement is not sure of a fact and this is exactly what the accuser has done.

All the accusations are base on the word of an unknown person "Peter Williams" who has not shown his face. This is base strictly on allegations and nothing else. They have not yet proven a damn thing. Until proven otherwise, Mr Menendez will be exonerated of all charges, but I doubt if anything will stick.

But you guys are all like a bunch of Romans, thirsting for violent spectacles to satiate your cravings for violence, bloodlust and cruelty. Be patient, wait and see, the truth, like oil in water will always float to the top

Both Menendez and Dr. Melgen are confirmed and well known pussy hounds.
Menendez is lying, the same way he told CNN reporter that: "we it came to my attention (in January 2013), that I had to reimburse the government for my trip to DR, I wrote a check", referring to the now three trips (not two) that he took onboard Dr. Melgen's jet in 2010. The reporter replied: "You reimbursed the goverment AFTER you got caught", and with the same "cara dura" he recited his dubious defense.
It is obvious that he did try to exert influence to help his pussy buddy, and biggest donator, no one can deny that.
I forecast a grim end to this modern "Profumo" type scandal, with disgrace and step down of Menendez, and Dr. Melgen possibly evading justice, and retiring to Thailand, where he will run a cathouse.

Remember Richard Nixon resigned before going to an impeachment trial and the "Peter Williams" of that time known as "Deep Throat" stayed anonymous from 1972 until 2005!

I think the IRS must be pissed that this doctor owes them $11,000,000 dollars yet he donates $700,000 dollars to Senator Menendez political efforts.

Melgen donated more than $750,000 last year to Menendez’s reelection campaign and other political committees and candidates.
Menendez has insisted that he only took two personal trips on the doctor’s plane and recently reimbursed him $58,500 for the travel expense — but only after an ethics complaint was filed against him in New Jersey last year.

Their reputation as whxre monger, appears to be pretty well established, all I am saing is that it is still too soon to jump to final conclusions. No final verdict has been reached quite yet. Yet all of you from day one, have jumped to conclusions, already pronounced them both guilty as charged, solely on the basis of allegations.

It is only fair and wise that, until then we will give them the benefit of the doubt. Remember, in America you are innocent until proven guilty, and when judgement day arrives, you all can open up your bottles of champagne and celebrate while others mourn the death of these accompished professionals.

Menendez acknowledged that his office contacted Medicare officials to help Melgen, but the senator denied he sought to intervene improperly in billing disputes between the doctor and the government.
Menendez said he contacted the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to ask generally about billing practices and policies. “The bottom line is, we raised concerns with CMS over policy and over ambiguities that are difficult for medical providers to understand and to seek a clarification
The senator called federal health officials in 2009 and met with them again in 2012, each time urging them to change what he called an unfair payment policy. Medicare ordered Melgen to repay the government program $8.9 million.

Look medical billing is a very complex and errors are constantly made, it happens all the time. Unfortunately, this case happens to be in the millions of dollars and the govt who happens to be short of cash and running on a trade deficit will use whatever excuse to get that money back.

What the FBI needs to prove if there was a malicious intent to defraud and I do not believe this is the case. I believe it was an error in the interpretation of the regulation. That is why Menendez felt the need to help out a political contributor. Melgen had an inside man to his rescue. It does not mean it was going to work or that he would be successful. He only tried to help as any good "friend" would. This is where things went wrong. Some one took the opportunity to use it against Menendez as simply a dark political ploy to discredit the senator. Menendez has an extensive record of ethical behavior and we can not judge an entire political career on one incident that unfortunately has back fired.

Mr.g,

Menendez comes from the Hudson County Democratic Party machine in New Jersey which is almost synonymous with political corruption. He is essentially the current Hudson County political boss. This is not that the first time that he has been involved in a potential political corruption scandal, when Chris Christie was US Attorney he was investgated for some federal issues as well.

Also Dr. Melgen has been investgate for Medicare billing issues before as well as for a federal income tax matter before this current one with the IRS.

So pardon the pun but neither one of these "Boy Scouts" are Virgins when it comes to these matters!

Mr. Menendez's Ethics Problem

Published: February 09, 2013

Senator Robert Menendez was never a distinguished choice for chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the position he ascended to this month by virtue of seniority. Concerns about that quality gap have sharply escalated amid new disclosures about Mr. Menendez's use of his position to advance the financial interests of a friend and big donor. Instead of trying to protect Mr. Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat, the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, needs to remove his gavel, at least pending credible resolution by the Senate Ethics Committee of the swirling accusations of misconduct. At issue are the curious dealings between Mr. Menendez and his close friend and benefactor Salomon Melgen, a wealthy Florida eye surgeon and major Democratic donor.

The senator's efforts to help Dr. Melgen, part-owner of a firm that had a long-dormant contract with the Dominican Republic to provide port security, revive that lucrative contract - deemed an exorbitant giveaway by business leaders and government officials there - were detailed in an article in The Times last week by Raymond Hernandez and Frances Robles. The contract's dubious legitimacy and Dr. Melgen's lack of experience in border security issues did not deter Mr. Menendez from pressing State and Commerce Department officials to insist that the contract be honored, including at a hearing in July of the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee over which he presided.Compounding the unseemliness, Senator Menendez's help came as Dr. Melgen was in the process of making donations totaling $700,000 to Majority PAC, a Democratic "super PAC" set up by former aides to Mr. Reid. Majority PAC ended up shoveling $582,500 to Mr. Menendez's 2012 re-election campaign.

Mr. Menendez's interventions on Dr. Melgen's behalf were not limited to port security. The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that Mr. Menendez personally raised concerns with top federal health officials in 2009 and again in 2012 about the fairness of their finding that Dr. Melgen had overbilled the government $8.9 million for care provided at his eye clinic. The Post also reported that Dr. Melgen invoked the senator's name repeatedly to exert pressure on federal fraud investigators. Last week, F.B.I. agents raided Dr. Melgen's offices in West Palm Beach and removed 30 boxes of documents and other material, but the focus of the inquiry is unclear. The relationship between Mr. Menendez and Dr. Melgen was drawn into the spotlight following recent reports that Mr. Menendez had accepted two round-trip flights aboard Dr. Melgen's jet for personal vacations in the Dominican Republic in 2010.

continued:

Written by: josean, 9 Feb 2013 6:08 PM
From: United States, Fighting the Dictatorship of the Narco PLD Mafia; Guillermo Moreno President 2016

In January, Mr. Menendez sent Dr. Melgen a check for $58,500 to reimburse the cost of the flights, which he had failed to report as gifts at the time or reimburse, as required. It appears Mr. Menendez has learned little from his own previous ethics issues or from the fall of a former New Jersey senator, Robert Torricelli, who decided not to run for re-election in 2002 amid allegations that he had inappropriately aided a big donor and accepted expensive gifts. It is unclear whether the Senate Ethics Committee has initiated a formal inquiry into Mr. Menendez's conduct, but a prompt and thorough review is surely called for. In the meantime, Mr. Menendez needs to relinquish his leadership role, at least temporarily.

It happens everyday, all over the world, and yes even in the good old usa. The difference is they let all the others get away, while with Menendez there is a motive behind it. It is for the sole purpose to destroy and bury him. Some one wants him out of the way, for one very specific reason. Under FBI scrutiny, Sen. Bob Menendez is 'one tough hombre'

New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez is at the apex of his career, the highest-ranking Hispanic in congressional history as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and one of the “Gang of Eight” senators leading the charge for immigration reforms. Not bad for the son of pre-Castro Cuban migrants — his mother a seamstress, his father an odd-jobs carpenter — who grew up in a Union City tenement and was the first member of his family to go to college.Menendez, 58 and a Democrat, today faces several serious allegations for his links to Salomon Melgen, a West Palm Beach eye doctor and wealthy donor under investigation by the FBI.But the veteran of New Jersey’s rough-and-ready politics, who once claimed he put on a bulletproof vest to testify against his former political mentor in a racketeering trial, has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and is expected to fight back vigorously.

“He is known as one tough hombre. You do not want to get cross-ways with him because he doesn’t suffer fools gladly and his mind is razor-sharp, and he will cut you to the quick,” said Washington lobbyist and Menendez campaign donor José Cardenas.Menendez also has strongly supported U.S. sanctions on Cuba, and been singled out as the key obstacle to the possibility that the Obama administration might try to improve relations with Havana in the next four years. During the custody battle over Elián González in 2000, Menendez proposed making him a U.S. citizen. And in 1996 he pushed the Helms-Burton Act to tighten the U.S. embargo.“From the day he was elected to Congress, Bob’s voice has been consistent and determined to shed light on the abuse of this totalitarian regime and to do all he could to have human rights be respected in Cuba,” said Rep. Well Mr. J, if nendez was a republican? The qualifying statement "temporarily" would have been left out! In the eyes of the media, he would be guilty by now, even if it was a lesser allegation!!! Case and point! A dem governor and a dem mayor block the relief effort during Katrina in good old Louisiana, Lil Bush was blamed. Now, we have a dem Pres in the white house. After sandy, he gets a free pass and the republicans are being blame by the media!!!! BIAS!!!!!!!!!

Poor little oppressed and persecuted Republicans; they control the US congress, hold the US Senate dysfunctional with their abusive partisan use of the filibuster, they have the majority on the Supreme Court, the majority of the Governorships and State legislatures and still everbody is just picking on them.

"Menendez Discouraged Giving Port Security Equipment to Dominicans"

By ERIC LIPTON and WILLIAM K. RASHBAUM

Published: February 11, 2013

WASHINGTON - Senator Robert Menendez sought to discourage any plan by the United States government to donate port security equipment to the Dominican Republic, citing concern that the advanced screening gear might undermine efforts by a private company - run by a major campaign contributor and friend of his - to do the work.

Robert Menendez Scandal Unfolds

By DOROTHY SAMUELS

Published: February 11, 2013

In the time-honored tradition of ballooning Washington money scandals, details keep emerging about the symbiotic relationship between Senator Robert Menendez and a Florida eye-surgeon and big donor named Dr. Salomon Melgen. The evidence that the New Jersey Democrat improperly used his office to help Dr. Melgen was already compelling on Saturday. That's when we called in an editorial for Mr. Menendez to step aside as chairman of the Senate Foreign Committee, at least temporarily, pending a credible review by the Senate Ethics Committee of the various accusations of misconduct against him.  Since then, new facts have come to light that underscore the need for Mr. Menendez to relinquish his gavel.

A story in today's paper by Eric Lipton and William Rashbaurm makes clear that Mr. Menendez's efforts to help Dr. Melgen secure enforcement of a lucrative contract - to provide port security in the Dominican Republic - went well beyond nudging officials at the State and Commerce Department. It turns out that just last month, Mr. Menendez actively sought to discourage any plan by the Homeland Security Department to donate port security equipment to the Dominican Republic. He expressed concern that providing the screening gear might undermine efforts by an unnamed private company - the one run by his friend and benefactor - to get that work.  And his staff went so far as to suggest that giving the Dominican Republic the screening equipment would play into the hands of the drug trade.Mr. Menendez has cited his deep concern with port security to justify his interest in enforcing Dr. Melgen's contract - worth as much as $500 million over 20 years.

This excuse would seem rather more credible if the senator's efforts on the doctor's behalf hadn't coincided with the latter's hefty donations - totaling $700,000 - to a Democratic super PAC. Or if that super PAC hadn't, in turn, funneled $582,500 to the senator's 2012 re-election campaign. At this point in this unfolding political drama there are two intriguing mysteries.

How did Dr. Melgen, who is the subject of a federal fraud investigation, presumably related to overbilling $8.9 million for care at his eye clinic, come up with the money to make such large political gifts?

And when will the Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, require Mr. Menendez to give up his leadership role?
