Santo Domingo.- Former president Leonel Fernandez’s attorneys on Thursday said the National District Office of the Prosecutor has not admitted any complaint against him, much less against his think tank, the Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (Funglode).
The lawyers referred to the charges of malfeasance, perjury and money laundering filed January 24 by minority party Al-País president Guillermo Moreno against Fernandez and Funglode.
The political leader said the former chief executive used Funglode as a mechanism to raise money, which his view, among other things, violate criminal statutes and the Constitution.
Moreno’s complaint charges Fernandez, who heads Funglode, obtained monies from many companies, which then became the think tank’s assets, for which the former president could dispose of them without government control.
National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso yesterday said Moreno’s complaint against Fernandez will be treated in the same way as the other cases submitted daily, but neither confirmed nor denied media reports that the former president had been subpoenaed.
The defense
Former Justice minister Radhamés Jimenez and former Presidency Legal adviser Abel Rodriguez del Orbe, among others, comprise Fernandez’s defense team.

one way or another I feel sure many so called facts in the DT version of this story , which is much the same as elsewhere are not accurate. It has been suggested that LF owns Funglode, it has been suggested that Funglode is a government body , it has been suggested that LF is simply the President of Funglode and it has been suggested that it is a private company . It has been suggested that companies paying into Funglode received government contracts in return and it has been suggested that the money is solely for think tanks .
I am getting a feeling that this is a case full of holes .

I think Leonel should have set up a non-profit organization that runs on donations. These donations could have come from companies that were profiting sweetly during Leonel's term. Oh wait, he did create this type of organization.
Now we just need to figure out the percentage of companies that donated which also received a government contract. Or subsidiaries of companies that received government contracts. This wouldn't be too tough to figure out, but unfortunately no one is going to believe the department carrying out the investigation, so why waste more tax money on this whole mess. We'll never really know the truth.

Travel abroad charged to taxpayers is down by 90%, reports Listin Diario today, Friday 8 February. Reportedly, ministers, deputy ministers and high-ranking military officers are traveling less. The newspaper reports that during the Fernandez government, the Ambassadors and Government VIP room at Las Americas International Airport would provide daily services to around 40-50 government officials who were traveling.

ADOCCO calls for investigation into UASD ICT platform
The Dominican Alliance Against Corruption (Adocco) is asking the rector of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) to sue those responsible for contracting the state university's technology platform. Rector Mateo Aquino Febrillet says that the contract was already in place when he took office, but he requested an audit from the Chamber of Accounts and is awaiting the results.Adocco said the UASD contracted the service for integrating the administrative, teaching and student areas' computer systems but their objectives for the investment of US$16 million have not been achieved.Julio Cesar de la Rosa Tiburcio, general coordinator of Adocco, said that a notice circulated by then-rector Roberto Reyna on 18 October 2007, said that the UASD's new Integration Information Registration System would turn the university into one of the most modern in the region.

I am afraid the PLD will postulate Fernandez for the 2016 elections, knowing how forgetful the Dominican people tend to be, I will not be surprised. If he wins it will mean the total collapse of our institutions. He sold government properties to the highest bidders, like the airport of Santiago, our only fuel refinery, the hospital recently built also in Santiago and so on. This man will sell the ground underneath his feet for a few dollars. I hope that with the recent charges filed against him people will open their eyes and see the light.
