Protocol prevents VP from attending pope’s inauguration

Santo Domingo.- Minutes after being announced the decree designating the first lady Candida Montilla as the person who will lead the mission to represent the country at Pope Francis I’s inauguration, vice president Margarita Cedeño said the protocol prevented her from attending Benedict’s enthronement, when she was the first lady.

"I remember that as first lady I could not attend the ceremony because it was only for presidents and vice presidents," she said via Twitter.

In another tweet, the vice president thanked God that "two disciples of Don Juan (Juan Bosch) had the chance of enthroning two popes in this century."

Her comments have drawn even more criticism in social networks with the following tweet: "But I give infinite thanks to God for the State Protocol that allowed me to go to the funeral ceremony for our beloved John Paul II."
