Santo Domingo.– Among the 47 countries classified by the United Nations Program for Development (UNDP) in the Medium Human Development category, the Dominican Republic is among the six nations with the lowest safety perception.

Only 38% of the population say they feel and 15% say they have confidence in people.

The "Human Development Report 2013," released last week, states that the other five countries with the lowest perception of safety are Botswana (31%), Namibia (33%), South Africa (38%) and Gabon (39%), all in Africa, and Paraguay (38%) in South America.

These percentages were obtained from the ones who answered "yes" to the question from the Gallup World Poll "Do you feel safe walking alone at night in the city or area where you live?".

Compared to the 47 countries with medium human development, the Dominican Republic is the country with the highest murder rate, but ranks sixth with the country with more cases.

With 25 deaths per 100 000 inhabitants, the Dominican Republic has less cases than South Africa (31.8), Guatemala (38.5), Belize (41.4), El Salvador (69.2) and Honduras (91.6).

The 38 and 15 polled must have been the criminals! I don't think anyone thinks there save, they have just become custom and accepted the fact that the system won't do the right thing anyway.

Misleading. These are only the ones with the desire and ability to answer a poll. Does anybody on this site remember even seeing the question? I agree that this is probably an accurate guess.

On saturday morning . a star student at University del Este was murdered 20 yards from his home in la Romana by two men on a motor bike ,,shots from a shot gun .The murderers did not stop to take anything from the body ,,just senseless murder ,Last year , a taxi ,carrying two men stopped in 19 de Marzo and the occupants blasted the driver to death and fled. I have written many times and as recently as last week in support of generoso that the RD that the situation regarding law and order, from the killers and robbers in the streets , to the fiscalarias and right up to the courts is appalling .
Whose fault ..well in la Romana there are, I am told more than a thousand policemen and crime has dramatically increased in the past 5 years ..In the capital during the day there are torist police, un armed and puney working in the day and at night you are lucky to see even a passing police car . I really think we are at a stage of zero tolerance and capital punishment needs to be reintroduced

“Euclides Gutiérrez Félix contradicts this week Gallup Poll results “

“Euclides is pissed because Balaguer is more valued than Juan Bosch”

“Euclides Gutiérrez Félix, veteran leader of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD),didn’t like that the most recent Gallup-Hoy Poll revealed that Joaquín Balaguer is more admired than Juan Bosch in the Dominican people, and considered that this fact is false and is part of the alleged CONSPIRACY campaign.”

May the Fact the Big Piece of Caca doesn’t Pay his Light Bill may all be affecting the Thieving PLD’s image!

You PURPLE Criminals have done more to Destroy Don Juan’s Image and Legacy than anybody else!

In Fact Narco Lie-onel state he was a Balalgerista and Vinchista, so now you Sow what you Have REAPED!

The greatest danger that always worries me are the two people on motor bikes , the passenger having the gun ..they seem to be able to kill and rob at will ..whether you are stopped at a red light ...some people do or whether you are walking from the supermercado or simply driving on a small pasola. I am frightened now .
I suppose these people are drugged out sometimes on ice, grass or cocaine or are simply evil people like the student who shot the policeman from close range in the face ,But I am sure a tough response is needed .
In the case of the student above the mother is desperately poor so the police have no interest in solving the murder when they can them selves go out a night with bullet proof vests and murder them selves any propspective villain

What do you Expect in a country were even the Ex-president of the Supreme Court’s admits being an accomplice to a Criminal Act!

“Subero admits Ruling on Sun Land case was political”

"The former President of the Supreme Court, Jorge Subero Isa, said yesterday that the ruling of the case Sun Land, in 2008, it was a political decision that negatively marked the path of the judges who had been appointed in 1997.

If I am walking alone down the street, in almost any city in the world, I always experience a feeling of relief if I see a Policeman walking towards me.

Here, if I am walking alone down the street and I see a Policeman headed towards me I am scared to death.

If we start to pay our Policemen a living wage, and punish them for criminal acts, that will change.

By the way, what ever happened to the rumor that the government was going to double the salary for the Police?

BY the way, whatever happened to the reduction in generals and admirals and the other high paid do nothing military officials?

I really love how Josie keeps on pushing that the D.R. was better under the PRD.

Almost like Ironic, hipster humor......But nearly as clever.

But the story is really not related to the sunland case but rather to the personal safety of people living here and matador was relating a story that most people can produce a similar story or stories..it is becoming increasingly dofficult to keep safe in the DR ..Maybe it would help to double the wages of police but they are really after the events occur although they do go out in their bikes into the barrios that have much delinquency and they sometimes come back with a suspect but more often thannot just a pocketful of phones , wallets and other stolen items that the police profit from ,

"but the story is really not related to the sunland case"

Well Maybe if we Didn’t have to pay for the $130,000,000 Dollars YOUR God Narco Lie-onel and his Money Laundering bagman Felix Bautista Stole, we would have enough to give a living wage to the police officers.

So you see NINCOMPOO Apologist, it's all RELATED!

Agree with Ricardito. Bring back the death penalty, not to punish, not to scare — it does neither — but to rid the world of them and their genes!

And juan-josie-colectivistas: study after study show that money is not a motivator but a disinhibitor.
Paying what you think is "living wages" only encourages the @#%$'s to bring their primos aboard.
But then izquierdistas rarely think things through to their logical conclusions.

SANTO DOMINGO.-The acts of violence, mainly armed robberies and murders, have increased in recent days in the Dominican Republic, leaving the impression that there has been a failure in the Public Safety Plan that a little more than one month ago began to be implement by the Government.
