Santo Domingo.- The Senate on Wednesday passed the Armed Forces Statutory Law, with sweeping changes in the military such as fewer generals; a civilian could head the Ministry to be called “of Defense”, and changes the names of the Navy and the Army.

There’ll be one general per 1,000 members in each branch, the ”Navy of War’s” current name will be changed to Dominican Navy, while the National Army will be renamed Dominican Army.

The Minister will have a term of no more than two years, but the President can extend it two additional years by decree.

A General would hold the rank no longer than 10 years, with mandatory retirement after that. The same applies to the ranks of colonels or Navy captains. The retirement age for all members of the military is voluntary after 25 years of service, but mandatory at 40.

Promotions and retirements will only be conducted on February 27 of each year, Day of National Independence.

To be promoted, the beneficiary must have at least four years in their current rank.

if you asked me we should have no more than 6-10 generals, all appointed by geographical boundaries.. While the government complaints that there is not enough money for the fiscal budget it continues to pay high salaries to a high number of do nothing generals and officials.. And while our taxes were raised the government continues with a very similar payroll to the previous administration. Anyone able to think rationally knows the government can significantly trim expending by dumping all the unnecessary botellas and redundant government employees.

More empty promises about reductions in our wasteful armed services.

What happened to the reductions promised the last time, and the time before that, and the time before that?

In our hot climate things tend to take longer... a lot longer. As long as things actually improve I'm fine with it.

About freaking time. Our military is a joke, I don't think it can conduct a proper war even with a crappy nation like Haiti. Sack them all!

Now give them a mission, training schedules and equipment to do what is needed to defend the country. When a member is caught doing something illegal send him to a punishment barracks where his life will be miserable for disgracing the uniform. Post them on streets and intersections to support the Police in crime and traffic control. In other words make the country proud
