Power companies: Energy czar should name those who’d “abort” coal plants

Santo Domingo.- The executive vice president of Dominican Republic’s power companies grouped in the ADIE on Tuesday said they don’t oppose the construction of two coal-fired plants, and advised the government to be more rigid and identify those who seek to “abort” the project

Milton Morrison noted however that the government should improve collection and cut non-technical and technical losses that he affirms account for as much as 40% of the supplied energy.

Morrison’s statement comes less than 24 hours after State-owned Electric Utility (CDEEE) CEO Ruben Jimenez accused unnamed energy industry sectors of “seeking to sabotage” a call for tender offers to build two coal-fired plants.

"When one agent in the system strengthens, the energy sector benefits, there’s no resistance to develop the project," he said.

He said however that entire industries benefit from blackouts, ranging from those who sell inverters to those who make candles.

Morrison, speaking during a forum on renewable energy’s impact held at the Torre Empresarial, also advised the government to be more rigid and identify those who would hinder the project.
