Santo Domingo.- A second census in as many weeks has debunked popular belief which place the number of Haitians in the country at “more than one million,” but still, a major university on Wednesday said it counted 458,233 nationals from that nation.

The Pontifical Catholic Universidad (PCMM) placed the country’s immigrant population at around 524,000, of which 87.3% (458,233) are Haitian nationals.

In addition to the Haitians, 13,514 immigrants are from the U.S.; 6,720 from Spain; 4,416 from Puerto Rico and 4,040 from Italy. Also tallied were 3,643 Chinese, 3,599 French, 3,434 Venezuelans, 3,145 Cubans, 2,738 Colombians and 1,792 Germans.

The figures disclosed Wednesday morning are from the first National Immigrants Population Survey in Dominican Republic conducted by the PUCMM’s Center for Caribbean Studies, in coordination with the National Statistics Office (NSO) and the UN Population Fund.

458000 with proper documentation. does this census count squatters nd illegals? no census can. Just let them be dominican, Brazilian, peruvian, bahamian etc already. considering how deplorible the title of being considered haitian is. it really unfortunate to come from the worst stigmatized and unpopular nation in all the americas. All the nations of the americas should just let them find a new identity in there host society as they wish. id raather live in nicaragua than haiti.

That's why many of them hate being called Haitian even-though they can barely say a few words in spanish. A few of our construction workers are like that, including our night watchman.

Remember how cuba kept all there jamaicans yet rounded up all the fully accultured haitians and sent them back. i guess they kept the reciept. These Haitians found there way to the border which prompted trujillo to do that unfortunate massacre. But still haitians think countries like cuba give a dam bout them

MIAMILIVE I can see your passionate hatred , you desire of sabotage , your obsession about Haitians .
Hating someone means that you go out of your way to find a reason to hate them. Expressing such strong emotions towards someone you may have a good reason to do so. If it is that traumatic , I suggest you to look for help.
If you think hatred is so beautiful , try to look it at it the other way around. Your curses, bad mouth, mistreats won't change much about whom your " hatee ". At the end of the day, you still be more miserable than when you started it. It can raise your blood pressure, and it effects your thinking process. Your hatred surely will engulf you.
Poverty, war and death are the end results when an entire nation is filled with hate

People!
This is the same survey presented a couple of weeks ago. The same one that was shown back in May and that was conducted in 2012. Just look at the numbers in page 17. Again, this is a survey not a census!

PatDiamond,

There are no 2 different "census". Actually there is no immigrant "census" at all. What is being toss around is the same "survey" from 26 July 2013, which was the same from 2 May 2013, which was performed in 2012.

"A survey is a data collection activity involving a sample of the population. A census collects information about every member of the population. You might say a census is a 100 percent sample survey."

You know what Archangel96 , I realize much people use this site as playground to test others intelligence . You wouldn't have to define for the guy the difference between "sensus" and "survey" . It is preliminary , he shouldn't be posting absurdities in the first place . But thanks for highlighting the difference for the others.

I DO NOT HATE HAITIANS, i neither wished them harm or misfortune. all im saying is that im tired of haitians going out of their way to put their business and HATEFUL AND EMBITTERED opinions on our site. Its not our fault haiti is in a hole yet we get trashed internationally because were held responsible for the misfortune of your people. Instead of protesting for documentation infront of DR national palace for documentation, why not protest for your non existant birthrights in haiti? because haitian NEVER go back and invest in there own country its a cyclical braindrain. meanwhile you guys get excited that your bans are damaging to our economy in light of haitis own "ventures" which is within their rights in trade, but fail to realize the hundreds of thousands of your people who now go hungry for the benefit of foreign investors and your duplicitous bourgoisie

Nearly 87% of immigrants consist of LEGAL haitians nealy 500k but thats not enough, every haitian feels entitled to dominican nationality and claim too be as dominican as mangoo but will slit your throat it you bring up the fact thaat their haitian. Why, because their is no desire to associate themselves with a failed state, and much rather go demanding rights in a foreign country, not just DR, since they quit tryin to make a life back home. If they put as much effort as they have done badmouthing dominicans, and instead badmouthed their government who sold them off to the DR by the 10s of 1000s, and take your money back and invest, maybe haiti would be a better place. but no, instead u pray for rights and citizenship in other nations in hopes that your children wont bear the title of haitian. this is whe first black republic has been reduced to...

"Though it is called the Failed States Index, that is not to say that every country on the FSI is a failed state — after all, Finland is ranked on the FSI. That is also not to say that any country on the FSI is necessarily failed — though Somalia might be the closest approximation to what many people may consider to be a failed state. Rather, the Failed States Index measures the pressures experienced by countries and thus adjudges their susceptibility to state failure. Ranking top on the FSI does not in and of itself mean that a country is failed — it simply means that of all countries, that one country is the most at risk of failure."

am I lacking a bit in the reading comprehension department or most people simply skim thru what is written here?Census vs survey which is it?Is DT with its yellow journalism style when it come to haiti's coverage all a sudden is pro haitian? are they in collusion with the Dominican elite who benefit from their source of abundance of cheap labor. Is every dark skin Dominican with african futures must be haitian as per popular belief hence the disparity between facts & fictions? can someone please clarify.

I think they're just looking to spark debates and arguments by publishing these yellow stories. These stories get more views than real stories and in turn generate more advertising revenue.

This census is BS. They're trying to count people that don't want to be found. They need to prove their methodology to lend weight to their report.
