Dominican Republic president says education is top priority

Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina on Thursday called education the Dominican Government’s key priority, for which the signing of a pact between all sectors of society is urgent.

During the launch of consultations for the National Educational Reform Pact, Medina said it’s a historic and momentous process for the country.

To implementation of this agreement, Medina convened the Economic and Social Council (CES). "Starting today and over the next three months, we will have in our hands the possibility of changing our country’s reality profoundly and forever."

He said allocating 4% of GDP for education is the starting point to ensure investment in a quality system and noted that given the problem’s complexity, cautioned the players falling into triumphalism.

Phases of the agreement

The pact for education reform’s four phases are consultation, discussion, conclusion and the creation of an oversight committee, and calls on all of the country’s forces to join hands to achieve long-term commitments, as stated in the National Development Strategy.
