Fatality, sniping shatter ruling party’s image of discipline

Santo Domingo.- The Political Committee of Dominican Republic’s ruling PLD party was called to an emergency meeting amid mounting allegations of fraud, use of taxpayers’ money and challenges to the results of Sunday’s elections to choose new members of its Central Committee.

Quoted by diariolibre.com, PLD spokesman Hector Olivo said the meeting will be held at the office of the party’s presidency.

The PLD’s image of discipline has been shattered in the wake of at least one fatality in the north-western town of Santiago Rodriguez, and dissatisfaction with many candidates alleging fraud in the voting.

Supporters of president Danilo Medina and those of PLD president Leonel Fernandez have hurled accusations and counteraccusations of fraud and use of taxpayers’ money through the numerous government agencies.
