New extradition treaty strengthens DR-USA relations

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican authorities pointed out that the new extradition treaty between the Dominican Republic and the United States, disc is a significant step forward in strengthening the bilateral relations between the two countries.

Justice minister Francisco Dominguez Brito called it an achievement for the Dominican authorities and said the amendments to the treaty -originally signed between Santo Domingo and Washington in 1909- seek to respond to the many new crimes and criminals.

"It is a significant achievement in the fight and prosecution of transnational crime, since the new rules would cover variations and modalities, especially organized crime not covered before. Crimes such as human trafficking, high-tech crimes, terrorism, and any action which constitutes an offense in any of the two countries, can be accepted to start extradition proceedings, always attached in each case to the judicial standards of both countries," Dominguez said.
