Dominican Republic deputies slash slush fund on scathing rebuke

Santo Domingo.- After months of widespread criticism, Chamber of Deputies president Abel Martínez on Tuesday announced the elimination of the slush fund called ‘El Barrilito (the little barrel) assigned to each lawmaker each month.

He said the funds already consigned in the Chamber’s budget for November and December will be redistributed to public hospitals across the country.

Martinez tweeted the announcement at noon. "We’ll reassign the 2015 budget (RD$100 million) to health centers that provide services to the population of low income."

“Today we announce that the social management fund (barrilito) allocated to the deputies will be reassigned,” the lawmaker said, and asked his colleagues to support his initiative.
