Drug confiscations reach alarming figures

Santo Domingo.- The confiscations of cocaine in the Dominican Republic have reached alarming peaks during the last five years, with 34 metric tons from 2009 to 2013.

A report by outlet eldia.com.do reveals that more than half the drugs reached Dominican territory by sea on ships from South America, especially Cartagena, Colombia.

More than 8,635 kilos were seized at ports, airports and other parts of the country just in 2013, while Antinarcotics Agency (DNCD) figures reveal that 2012 topped the list since 2009, with more than 9.6 tons of cocaine seized.

Other drugs

From 2009 to 2013,210.8 kilos of heroin were seized by the DNCD, in addition to crack, extasy and marijuana.

Worrisome

And despite the DNCD’s alarming figures, more worrisome are data revealed by US ambassador James W. Brewster, who recently estimated that of the 60 tons of different drug which went through Dominican Republic just in 2013, only 25% was seized.
