IACHR demands Dominican Republic to fully comply with ruling

Santo Domingo.– The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) on Friday demanded the Dominican Republic to comply with the ruling that states that the rights of Haitians and Dominicans of Haitian descent –deported between 1999 and 2000– were violated.

This week the country refused to comply with the IACHR ruling "because it violates the sovereignty of the Dominican nation," a topic that was discussed at the public hearing of the Commission on the last day of its 153rd Period of Sessions, held in Washington.

"It’s not about getting into internal affairs. It’s about international obligations the Dominican Republic voluntarily acquired," said Commissioner Felipe González, referring to the accession of the Dominican Republic to the American Convention on Human Rights.
