Country’s ‘owners’ now turn on each other

Boca Chica, Dominican Republic.- A truck driver who worked out of Caucedo Port , Boca Chica (east) was gunned down Thursday in a shootout between truckers of the country’s biggest truckers’ union (Fenatrado) and the rival group, Boca Chica’s Container Truckers Union, over control of the cargo at the sprawling facility.

Boca Chica Police Precinct commander Mariano Brito said seven people are being held in connection to the homicide, including the alleged shooter Miguel Feliz, member of the Boca Chica truckers union.

Brito said there were no injuries and police investigate the causes of the fatality.

The country’s truckers unions, and the associations of owners of buses and trucks are know as the country’s “owners,” from their constants and often violent protests, and from the fear they strike on law enforcement.
