Truckers’ strike draws troops to Dominican Republic’s busiest port

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s busiest port Haina Oriental was militarized Friday when truckers who haul asphalt staged a wildcat strike from a ongoing dispute with the owners of petroleum processing plants.

The strikers halted more than 82 trucks and blamed the conflict the plants’ owners, who allegedly shut them out of the asphalt transport business, and demand half of the freight service.

"What we’re doing is a work shutdown, without problems and what they have is a symbol of war…I see guards, cops if we’re doing things as should be done, " said Antonio de la Rosa, executive of the truckers union, adding that the transport of asphalt will be partial until around 6pm.
