US Embassy donates funds to the Hermanas Mirabal Foundation

Salcedo, Dominican Republic.- The US Embassy donated US$47,450 to the Hermanas Mirabal Foundation to fund a project to restore and preserve the garments and accessories embroidered by the sisters Patria, Minerva and Maria Teresa, assassinated on orders of the dictator Rafael Trujillo Nov. 25, 1959.

La donation is part of the "Funds of the United States Ambassador for Cultural Preservation," an award from the State Department’s Educational and Cultural Affairs Bureau, won by the Foundation.

The project to preserve the items in the Museo Casa de las Hermanas Mirabal in Salcedo (central) was one of 43 winners around the world, of 134 proposals submitted last year.

US ambassador James W. Brewster headed the ceremony and stressed the importance sustaining the Mirabals’ legacy. "This museum is recognized worldwide as an example of the struggle to end the violence against women."
