There’re carcinogens in imported breads, bakers warn

Santo Domingo.- The medium and small bakeries association (UMPHI) on Tuesday affirmed that the country imports weekly five to six containers of breads that contain potassium bromate, a carcinogenic compound, and asked the authorities to investigate.

UMPHI president Francisco Capellan said the country had already agreed not to use that chemical, but noted however that breads are still imported from countries where the carcinogen’s use isn’t banned.

He called on the Consumer Protection Agency –Proconsumidor- and the Public Health Ministry to investigate. "Public Health and Proconsumidor must conduct a thorough investigation so the bread that arrives in the country is produced in the same manner we do; free of that carcinogenic substance."
