Flooding from downpours: One dead,100 homes damaged

Montecristi, Dominican Republic.- The North Yaque river started overflowing its banks early Tuesday and washed the access roads to several towns near Montecristi (northwest), where torrential downpours have flooded homes and crops.

Schools canceled classes it the most affected communities, including Castañuela, Villa Vasquez, Guayubin, Palo Verde, Las Matas de Santa Cruz, Laguna Salada and Hatillo Palma.

Outlet listin.com.do reports that Civil Defense and firefighters evacuated several families in low-lying areas and took them to shelters.

The rains continue as wee reportedly flooded, plantations under several inches of water; although no official figures on the damages have yet to be reported.

On Monday one Haitian drowned in Santiago Rodriguez and more than 100 homes were damaged in the town of Loma de Cabrera, Dajabon province.
