Catholics take abortion battle to Congress

Santo Domingo.- To the beat of chants and wielding pickets dozens of parishioners of various Santo Domingo churches on Tuesday expressed opposition to abortion in front of Congress, calling on lawmakers to reject the observations cited by president Danilo Medina to veto the amendment of the Penal Code.

"Babies don’t know about laws," "Yes to life, no to abortion," "Lawmakers defend life," "Ratify the Penal Code," read many of the pickets carried by the Catholics led by the priest Manuel Ruiz, accompanied by colleagues Luis Rosario, Mario de la Cruz, Catalino Tejada, Wilfredo Montaño and bishop Victor Masalles.

Chamber of Deputies president Abel Martinez received the priests, accompanied by lawmakers Lucia Medina, and Ramon Rogelio Genao.

"They don’t even have to study it, they have no need to listen any longer because they’ve heard everybody, what they have to do is enforce what has already been voted, they’ve already studied it for 14 years and only have to ratify the yes to life," said Ruiz.
