Immigration favors that Haiti collects taxes in binational market

Dajabon, DR.– Immigration Agency director Jose Ricardo Taveras on Saturday said that Haiti may collect taxes for the informal trade that takes place in the border area, because that is a sovereignty right the neighboring nation has.

He pointed out that the Dominican Republic has the right to exercise sovereignty in the way it handles taxes, always based on the law. "Traders must understand that the Haitian State also has the need and the right to collect taxes, just like the Dominican State. The informality in which trade occurs must cease," the official said.

Taveras said that the Immigration Agency has a list of nearly 400 Haitian citizens who cross the border daily to make trade, to study and perform domestic services.
