Torched tires, blocked streets as protests resurge in Haiti

Dajabón, Dominican Republic.- Protests by Haitians resurged Thursday in the town of Ouanaminthe, with torched tires and the main street blocked, demanding electricity, drinking water and other basic services.

The turmoil again kept Dominican Consulate staff away from the offices which have been shuttered most of the week, after a mob hurled stones and bottles at the facility.

Dominicans vehicles couldn’t cross into Haitian territory at border area on Thursday, as a lack of security for truck drivers was evident on the Dajabón-Ouanaminthe road, blocked by protesters on the Haitian side.

Work resumed at the consulate yesterday but the tense situation continues, as calls for calm by officials from both countries went unheeded.

It’s unclear whether the market usually held Fridays and Mondays on the Dominican side of the border would be open tomorrow Saturday.
