On one hand the advocates for green ecology want the mining banned, on the other hand the thousands of families that feed their families, and educate their children, with the thousands of jobs that Falcondo provides.
Should the government protect the humans? Or go like the Alaskans, banning oil exploration, to protect the elks and white owls? Are wild animals more important than humans? Then we should ban eating meat as well.
We can have clean exploitation of natural resources, with minimal ecological damage.
In poor countries such as ours, imported solutions and PC correctness, does not provide food on the starving tables of thousands of neglected Dominican families.
I am for the middle way, allow mining with maximum ecological conditions.

"Protest Against Exploitation of Loma Miranda – Dominican Republic"

January 31, 2014

Citizens in Bonao marched against exploitation of Loma Miranda today. They would like the area to be declared as a national park in order to protect the source of water of the lower Cibao region which hundreds of farmers depend upon for irrigation of their crops.

Multinational company, Xstrata Falconbridge has already caused significant mining devastation at four previous sites, Loma Peguera, El Verde, Ortega and Ponton.

Glencore under fire over Iran and in Dominican Republic

It's not been an easy year so far for Glencore, the world's largest commodities trader.

A confidential U.N. Panel of Experts is said to confirm that the company supplied thousands of tons of alumina to Iranian, which may have aided the country's nuclear program.

The UNDP has also rejected Glencore's environmental plan for its Falcondo  nickel mine in the Dominican Republic.

"""Are wild animals more important than humans?''""

As a matter of fact, yes!!
There are 9 BILLION of us, and very few left of them.

In this case, many thousands of jobs will be lost by banning the miners, that's unfortunate. What some people can't see, though, is that mining is a temporary undertaking, it will stop when the minerals are exhausted and its workers will be, once again, unemployed.
In the meantime, the area would have suffered untold damage to the detriment of a greater number of its population.
Land will cease to support life and rivers would have become polluted with lead and arsenic which are known by- products of the process of extracting gold and other minerals.
Mining is a temporary fix to unemployment; growing crops, fruits, vegetable and/or raising cattle, et al, is forever.

Next to populism, Nationalism is the lowest form of political speak there is.

You cannot be a nationalist when it comes to business and then turn around and claim you believe in freedom and liberty.

You are scum.

Anyone who has the arrogant, audacity to classify an animal over a human being is beyond reprehensible.

I would gladly, personally j
Choke every Chimpanzee on the planet to death if it would save even one AIDS infected, Crack Wh*re but if it was to save you I would consider giving Bonzo a reprieve.

You are just like the other holier-than-thou, "progressive" types who live the good life yet are quick to tell the poor to reject bettering their lives.

Having family from there and spending some of my childhood there ,
I know the beauty of that part of the country.

Which makes me an interested party. I remember the sky over Bonao burning red and when I'd ask what was it the adults would answer : LA FALCONBRIDGE .

They would then explain that they were taking zinc out of the mountain and the red sky was the result.

Years later I read an article about some usual shady deal uncovered haphazardly and it was discovered gold or gold ore was being smuggled along with zinc exports.

With the investments these multinationals are putting out they are going to always ask for the lions share of the profits. If we are going to damage our environment to extract minerals, at least lets wait till we have the resources and technology to mine it ourselves so the profits stay in DR.

That should give Loma Miranda a couple of decades of reprieve.

In the grand scheme of things, we, humans depend more on animals for survival, than you have the capacity to comprehend.
And I'm not talking about animals we raise for food.
The extinction of a species affects us in subtle but adverse ways. We, humans have been exploiting this earth incessantly. We encroach on and destroy their habitat until there aren't any more of a particular species. All in the name of "progress" and for the perceived benefit of humankind... A real tragedy.
People like yourself could not fathom the importance of living diversity. It is vital to the very survival of our own species. But unfortunately, there are more people who think like you, than there are of me. This is a major reason why this planet is a f***cked up as it is. The difference between a progressive and prosperous nation, and one that lives in misery, is whether it takes good care of its environment.
Don' agree? just take a good look at the topography of Haiti, versus that of DR.

Radar cuts and pastes some feel good babble and yet says nothing of substance.

here is substance.

95% of every animal that has ever existed on this planet are now extinct.

Extinction is a common occurrence over the billions of years this planet has existed.

Nature is a cruel b*tch. Survival of the fittest.

Radar is probably on of those types who says they love nature yet there actual experience is being a coach potato watching animal planet.

True enough, Mr. C, but nature always leaves some other animal or organism to takes its niche.
Humanity leaves nothing but desolation, unsuitable for even human habitation.
This planet is big enough for ALL species to live in harmony.
It is when the arrogance and stupidity of people such as you, thinking we can do and undo with impunity, that the environment degrades to the point where nothing grows, and we all suffer for it.

I'm relieved to know that there are a few of us, Dominicans, who care enough to protect and preserve some of our territory for the benefit of our flora ,fauna, and all the life-giving rivers that flow from it ,and support us all, even you.
I shall hope our next generation sees nature as an ally for our progress and well-being; not something to be exploited and assaulted mercilessly, as you pretend.

You can flip a switch and have light and air conditioning but they have to sweat in the dark.

Oh, no..!! Heaven forbid.!! ..I could never do without my internet. It's the only way I can evidence to the world, what an ignorant fool you are.!

Progress and a good environmental policy are not mutually exclusive. A nation can have its industries, farms, cities, infrastructure AND have pristine forests, unpolluted rivers and streams, secluded animal habitats, etc, In short, a harmonious co-existence. A symbiotic relationship, if you will.

I don't know where you get this idea that it's perfectly fine to kill off any and all organisms, purely because they get in the way.! That's what foolish people do. We, under any and all circumstances, DO NOT want to do away with the biome present in any particular setting! To do so, is suicide.

I suggest you do a little research and educate your mind further, It will do you a world of good, trust me.
