Dominican Republic’s opposition party makes agonizing split official

Santo Domingo.- Dominican Republic’s opposition party (PRD) made its years-long and agonizing split official on Sunday, when it choose its new leaders for the various areas.

PRD president Miguel Vargas headed the convention at party headquarters while former president Hipolito Mejia held a parallel meeting at Club Los Prados, with several senior leaders who’ve been suspended from the organization.

The whirlwind process took just 30 minutes and under strict security, to avert the brawl staged by members of the two factions in Jan. last year. All the streets around PRD headquarters were closed to traffic, with the presence of around 75 private security agents.
