Washington.- The U.S. State Dept. denounced the "discrimination" against Haitian immigrants and their descendants in the Dominican Republic, in its annual report on human rights worldwide released Thursday.

The document says the country’s Constitutional Court ruling refuses nationality to persons born in the country of undocumented parents, particularly those of Haitian origin.

It also criticizes the violence against women, especially rape, among other problem.

In the Dominican Republic, the report says, there were also killings attributed to security forces, prison overcrowding, arbitrary arrests and detentions, trafficking and discrimination on sexual orientation.

The State Dept. report notes however that the Dominican Government took measures to punish those who committed human rights abuses, but cites "widespread perception of official impunity," especially top government officials.

The report, sent to Congress Thursday serves as a guide for US lawmakers to decide on the foreign aid Washington provides to each country.

Nothing new, but worth noting the fact that it is necessary for DR government to notice that these behaviors are not a thing of internal affairs, they are well known internationally as well.

Whaaaaaa..!

Let's see the human rights report from Haiti, I bet they've been getting rave reviews as always.

I mean, we all know how much Haiti cares about its people, right ?

Fukc the US!

They discriminate against everyone.

And they have caused the bad situations in Haiti, RD, etc., etc., because the US always supports the ruling elite and military.

trini, we should not bother with Haiti. It is their problem and they should deal with it as they see fit, just as we should deal with our issues as we see fit. Remember, you can judge yourself by comparing your behavior to someone else's.

The report by the state US Dept that Dominican Republic discriminates against Haitians is not quite accurate. I have repeatedly and tirelessly asked those who accuse the DR of this practice to provide clear evidence and concrete examples of this "discrimination" which we are guilty of committing, but each and every time they have failed to substantiate those claims. Unless this is a campaign to specifically discredit the DR, the US should refrain further from issuing any negative propaganda and should measure their words before disseminating misleading information out to the world.

They know very well that this is strictly an immigration, border control and legal documentation issue that for decades been left unresolved but today has turned into a snowball effect. I can understand why it can be misinterpreted as discrimination. But everyone knows this is not the case whatsoever.

jasfalon. Being in the US you have every right to say they discriminate against everyone, but that is a very general statement. What have you done to stop this discrimination ?

If you have done nothing about then it seems to me you have no cause to complain. If it so bad, as you seem to convey, then "Fukc the US!" and pack your bags and settle in the DR where they only discriminate against the Haitians.

I am willing to bet you will stay in the US and bite the hand that feeds you despite its discrimination against everyone.

Yes, that is true.

Yet, the Haitians do it in the DR out of the desperation to escape the abominable living conditions in their country.

When the generous hand of the US is bitten, it is for spite and/or vengance.

It's Gods fault they are desperate, OK. But, it's not who is at fault. It is the condition and what people do under its influence.

"Desperation" is entering the supermarket and sneaking baby formula and cough medicine under your coat because you have no money and need to feed and medicate a sick baby.

Spite and/or vengance you have money yet enter the supermarket and sneak a NY sirloin and wine under the your coat to get a five finger discount and to piss off the owner

1 ) How about not having a baby you can't feed.

2) Or pick yourself a supermarket that can afford to loose the stake, baby formula, and medication.

Haitians are attracting what they sowed.
Who started the latest DR-Haiti confrontation? Haitianos did, by lying in the chicken and egg row.
Then with really bitter and aggressive diplomatic accusations, in the highest forums, attempted to denounce the DR as a racist nation, that discriminates against blacks.
These below the belt and unfounded accusations, served to unite the DR, and witness a rise in Dominican nationalism, that had been dormant for years.
All Dominicans now are banded together, as one, solidly and unilaterally against the persistent Haitian aggressions.
Haitians have been know for "shooting themselves in the foot", and attracting loads of BAD karma with their unfounded threats, insults, lies, fabrications, and voo doo spells.
They have successfully achieved to polarize and unite, the whole DR nation, against their constant aggression, and never ending predatory incursions, into the DR.
Now an army of 10 million brave Dominicans, are guarding our land!

"Discrimination" is a very convenient word used to invoke images of horrific treatment of illegal folks living here. And nothing can be further from the truth. If treatment of Haitians by Dominicans is anything like it is here, in my neighborhood in East SD, then I would love to be in that position.

Those foreigners who denounce us, have never set foot in our shores. If anything, as I'm told by Haitians, we are, by far, a better place for many, as opposed to where they came from, and the dire situation endured there.

I have first-hand experience with the way these people live and work in the DR. I have a few Haitian friends whom I call on when in need. They are good, honest and reliable people whom we tread with respect and never ridiculed.

I know what discrimination is and feels like from my days in the US.
So please, don't assume on anything until you've seen and lived their (Haitian) experience in DR.

Self-Determination

The right of nations to self-determination, or in short form, the right to self-determination is the cardinal principle in modern international law (jus cogens), binding, as such, on the United Nations as authoritative interpretation of the Charter’s norms. It states that nations based on respect for the principle of equal rights and fair equality of opportunity have the right to freely choose their sovereignty and international political status with no external compulsion or interference

I am not sure how to take what you said, although I will agree, immigrants are just good people whose main motive is to seek opportunities and a better life elsewhere. However are you a pro-Haitians sympathizer who believes they should come and stay in the DR or just denouncing the accusations as false?

Guillermone--

I'm telling it like it is. From a humane point of view, I have to sympathize with people whose lives have come to mean little in Haiti. This is why they try to escape to other places (at all costs), where they find life to be more tolerable.. .

Back in 1964 when I was a mere child, my family for economic and political reasons, emigrated to the US., Simply to find a better place for us. The DR then, was not fit for living.
I don't condone illegal emigration, I feel it would be best if somehow, most Haitian were to find a better Haiti to go back to, and lessen our burden.

And yes, I'm a Haitian sympathizer. I dislike their government, but these are humble people who are here to escape hell and not to cause trouble.
If they were Cuban, Chinese, or any other nationality, I would feel the same.
Written by: Radar, 1 Mar 2014 2:06 PM
From: Dominican Republic

I don't believe for a second that they're being discriminated against.
They are not ridiculed, harassed, denied jobs, or treated any other way that can remotely be labeled discriminatory....At least not in my neighborhood...
I think whoever made these accusations never set foot on DR to personally investigate the validity of such claims. I feel this is something perpetuated by Martelly & Co. to garner sympathy.

I see not way of forcibly moving all the hundreds of thousands or millions of them, without incurring some kind of backlash that can cost us dearly.
Like it or not, we are stuck with a huge problem that should fairly be Haiti's. We must work with the international community and invite them over to see for themselves what we are up against and possibly help us help Haiti to become a nation where one can eat everyday, drink the water, and have a roof. Unless these very basic needs are met, I'm afraid we're up the creek and drowning.

Article is correct. DR SHOULD discrimate against HAiti and the USA. Haiti comes in and does nto contrite to anything, just atakes takes takes. USA comes in and runs over the local government and takes control of the country as if it were one of their own slave states. Both of you, get out and STAY OUT
