Dominican Cardinal slams Jesuits over Haitian offspring row

Santo Domingo.- An unusually peeved Cardinal Nicolas de Jesus Lopez Rodriguez on Thursday slammed the Jesuits and one of their priests, calling him a "scoundrel" who does whatever he wants.

The Dominican Catholic Church leader said Mario Serrano "talks babble" when he defends offspring of undocumented Haitians living in the country.

"I have to be respected in this country, but that man (Serrano) believes he’s the supreme pontiff," the cardinal said in a video posted by Noticias SIN where he’s speaking to a group of clergy.

He urged the priest’s superiors to suspend him and ask him to be quiet, while Serrano continues to defend the Haitians, noting that “no one has done more for Haiti than the Dominican Republic.”

"I am deeply upset with the Jesuits because they haven’t put Mr. Mario Serrano in his place."
