UN Haiti Mission chief on Dominican court ruling: Yes, but

Santo Domingo.- The head of the UN Haiti Stabilization Mission (Minustah) on Sunday acknowledged Dominican Republic’s right to set its conditions on citizenship and said it’s up to Dominicans to resolve the situation caused y the Constitutional Court ruling.

Sandra Honore warned nonetheless that if Dominican authorities fail to guarantee a solution to those affected by the ruling, some sectors in Haiti could be use that to press their Government for local political gains.

The head of Minustah, which also deals with Haiti’s internal situation and oversees Port-au-Prince’s reconstruction, affirmed that the agency supports the talks between the neighboring countries, and takes part as an observer in the high-level binational dialogue began Jan. 7 in Ouanaminthe.

“I’m encouraged by the progress between the two neighbouring countries in recent months, especially in the last meeting in Jimani,” Honore said of the encounter where Haiti and Dominican officials signed several agreements on immigration, agriculture, customs, environment and safety.
