Dominicans mark a dark day for journalism

New York.- "A flower for Orlando" is the event with which numerous organizations marked the 39th anniversary of the March 17, 1975 murder of Dominican journalist Orlando Martinez, next to the Santo Domingo State University (UASD) campus.

Martinez had published numerous articles questioning widespread corruption in the administration of the late Joaquin Balaguer, in his column for newspaper El Nacional.

Like every year, the ceremony on a cold and windy afternoon was held at Juan Pablo Duarte square, located at the corner of 170th St. with Broadway in upper Manhattan.

Dominican Fatherland Heroes Tribute Committee director Dionisio Bretón welcomed those present, which included representatives and leaders from several political and social organizations.

Among the people indicted for the murder figure former Air Force generals Rafael Lluberes Montas and Joaquin Antonio Pou Castro, the latter convicted to 20 years in prison.
