New York.- Allegations fly as the race for a seat in the 13th Congressional District reaches a critical stage, pitting New York State Senator, American- Dominican Adriano Espaillat against African American representative Charles Rangel, both veterans of the Democratic party.

Espaillat, himself the target of alleged ethics violations, called “desperate” his opponent’s accusations of "having received orders from those who give the money to his campaign."

The State Senator, who will face the veteran lawmaker from Harlem for the second time, said "Rangel is desperate and panicked."

But Rangel through his spokesman, asked whether Espaillat will join mayor Bill de Blasio and the children of New York, “or continue to fight for the special interests that fund his campaign.”

Espaillat campaign spokeswoman Chelsea Connor countered Rangel’s allegation, which in hew view "obviously reveals a desperate campaign, and in panic."

Rangel’s campaign referred to charter city schools and accuses Espaillat of supporting the initiative at the expense of poor students who are relocated at other facilities, replaced by the new privatization model. Di Blasio opposes charter schools.

"This baseless accusation comes from Charles Rangel, a man who has a record in the House of Representatives of violating the code of ethics, has a long list of violations and was reprimanded by his fellow legislators," Connor said.

Rangel has been reprimanded for not reporting rent from his DR homes. Used a rent controlled apartment for his political office and has another one plus a home. Guy is so out of touch with the people and reality it is scary. Calls the Tea Party the new KKK regardless of it's black membership

I am so tired of the bigoted, hate-filled, segregationist, skin color discrimination term Hyphen American. Exactly how is Charles Rangel African, in any way? Was he born on that continent, and if so, in which country? Did his parents immigrated directly to America from that continent? It's bad enough that there are tax payer supported bigots all over America who are constantly enforcing this is antiquated skin color discrimination, living of hate and stupidity, while screaming their superiority to genuine humans; its pathetic that anyone in a Caribbean country would insist on adopting the same gutter crawling bigotry. If a typical Dominican goes to the US, does he tell everybody first of all that is African? Would did he do it if he found out that the federal government will pay him money for nothing more than that?

Charlie RANGEL father RAUL-RALPH RANGEL was from PUERTO RICO.That makes him what?
SCHOMBERG who gave his name to the SCHOMBERG CENTER FOR BLACK CULTURE was born in PUERTO RICO too from a DUTCH FATHER.

That makes SCHOMBERG what.He was what can be called a ""MULATTO"" but he chose of being called BLACK
He had one of the greatest collection of art and cultural artifact from the AFRICAN CONTINENT.His heirs sold the COLLECTION to the NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY.
ARTHUR SCHOMBERG chose of being known as a BLACK MAN.

About the HYPHEN.The IRISH descendants ,even if their FOREBEARS had left IRELAND about 200 years ago want to be known as IRISH AMERICANS ;ditto for the GERMAN descendants etc..

Some want to deprive the descendants of AFRICANS of this right?

About AFRICANS who don't know what part of AFRICA they are from?
Not anymore ;if they want to know.

there is a very basic political divide between Rangel and Espaillat. Rangel does not believe that certain services should be privatized, such as schools. Espaillat is on the side of the charter crowd, because that means dollars for him. it is the same as Rangel's staunch opposition to the Iraq war, and the DR being for it.

Currently, Hyphen American is a term used for division across the population. Segregation, discrimination, and unearned skin color based entitlements. So no, that is not OK, when it is used as a primary identification in America. The term is usually used when there is federal money to be had, by people who have learned that they can be paid just for their skin color.

people have always learned that they can be paid just because of their skin color. that is why black people got only 2% of the 140 billion dollars in federal money earmarked for home purchases between 1936 and 1954 .don't start me up with words like segregation. we know who started that one, and it was not African Americans.

Are you claiming that housing assistance for purchases is restricted according to skin color in the United States? How can an educated person with experience even believe something that false? I know people across all of the skin colored divisions have not received any assistance for home purchases, even if on the face of it, they qualify.

Charles B. Rangel has Latino roots, amusingly enough. Before re-reading the entire article again, I could've sworn it said something about pitting Dominican against Dominican and I that Mr. Rangel was the other Dominican!

You can say that again.
And if there is anyone who at least looks the part, it is Rangel.
He looks like one of the most common phenotypes found among Dominicans.

Yes ,tell him DREADLOCKS.

The EUROPEANS are the ones who started this business about skin color.
The AFRICAN AMERICANS don't hyphenate themselves at their risk and peril.
The DOMINICANS in NEW YORK vote like the AFRICAN-AMERICANS ;about 90% of them voted for OBAMA.
That's how the PUERTO RICANS voted too.
The EUROS abused the HYPHENS.That's how the IRISH took control of the POLICE and FIRE DEPARTMENTS of NEW YORK.
WELL PAID JOBS!
They are not more intelligent than anyone!

I have never known any Americans who call themselves Italians, Irish, or Mexican who use the Hyphen travesty nomenclature. I've never seen any of our population segregated with a European American term. I stand by my original comment, that the Hyphen American government and media designation is bigotted and discriminatory and counter to American values.
