Chikungunya cases overwhelm Greater Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo.- 68 percent of households Greater Santo Domingo have reported at least one case of suspected chikungunya in the family thus far, while 136,835 suspected cases have been registered as of June 20 nationwide.

The Public Health Ministry’s Epidemiology Dept. on Wed. said 30,591 suspected new cases were registered last week nationwide, for a rate of 1,318 cases per 100,000 population. The latest report also notes the deaths of three people as suspected cases, the same amount listed in the previous bulletin.

Ten provinces have reported the highest number of cases, headed by the National District and San Cristobal, followed by San Pedro, Santo Domingo province, Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, Duarte, San Juan, Barahona and Independencia, according to the first national epidemiology survey.
