Santo Domingo. - National Police chief Manuel Castro on Thursday warned that the authorities won’t allow criminals to "take over the streets of the country under no circumstances.”

The official responded to questions on the latest spate of alleged shootouts in which police agents have gunned down at least three suspects.

He said criminals have sought to “corral, defy and confront the authorities” across the country in recent days. "In no country in the world is the police authority so defied or confronted as it’s done in the Dominican Republic."

With barely an 8th grade education, whose primary goal is to work and find out who is going to give them money (or exhort them) for "la cena" What do they expect?

A police reform is strictly needed. One that is made up of exemplary citizens, with at least two years of a college education, with real training, with real equipment, with clothes that fit. A team that is well paid,so that they do not exhort the population. They would be well respected

lovingit, i posted a few weeks ago that the attacks upon police constitute a defiance of the state apparatus. the criminal element do not recognize the police as a legitimate arm of governance, but simply as a part of a criminal enterprise. some fools here believe that the assaults here upon police are occasioned by poverty and desperation, which is nonsensical beyond belief. if the objective was to get money, they would be robbing guys in BMWs, not AMET officers,

Every Dominican who TRULY loves his Country and Family should be Obsssed with putting NARCO Lie-onel in Jail and ensuring the PLD Mafia never gets in power again!

The problem is your in love with a NARCO like Sobieda, above everything else Ms. Vickey so your emotions don't allow to see the TRUTH!

Well said OHHVICTOR. Josean blames Leonel even when it doesn't rain like Leonel is god or is the one holding the guns and pulling the triggers. Dude sees Leonel even in his black morning coffee. We have these criminals because the society as whole had given their back to those less fortunate ones. A good example is that when a Dominican is deported from the USA after serving their times in jail they cannot get a job because of that. But yet in the USA there are programs and organizations that helps those people and that gives them hope. When is this country since they can't get a job they go and do what they know to do best and that my friends is the major problem to what is happening in this country. The society has to give these people some sort of opportunity a chance to become better human being. I know many deportees from my time working at call centers that are working there and many of them regret what they did and now just want to have a life as citizen of this society.

You earn you respect bye the people doing what you were sworn to become, to protect and serve anytime anywhere even off duty, but when you ask from public money upfront to solve a crime,or to just simply ask money any chance they can get with no reason, this is pathetic to all, i dont really blame them its the government that providing them with a salary that not even they themselves can live of imagine if the y have families.

Platano, go ahead; say the magic word..Trujillo.

this is the 21st century. society has to evolve. we cannot look to dictatorship by a tyrant as the solution to social and political maladies. something is wrong, and it should not have to be addressed by having some murderous strongman whipping people into shape. that is a medieval solution.

uncontrolled repression cannot work in this era. during the days of Trujillo, a few guys had some rusty old revolvers. today, every barrio thug is packing some lethal iron. these guys do not need to get into faceoff shootouts with the cops. if they get into small urban guerilla gangs, and make sporadic raids on certain targets, they will completely destabilize the country. if the cops believe that an all out shooting war with these guys is winnable, they had better redefine their understanding of victory.

Haitian cheap labor are depleting the job market for Dominicans and lowering wages,
in their own country. With no education and no jobs our youth are turning to crime in our country for survival. The execive chep Haitians labor is the problem.
