Official’s complaint of no guts to fight corruption roils the country

Santo Domingo.- Most of the personalities who were asked about National District prosecutor Yeni Berenice Reynoso’s statement that there’s a lack of political will to fight corruption, questioned Dominican Republic’s ruling PLD party, which in their view must demonstrate its interest to deal with the problem with facts.

Institutionalism and Justice Foundation (Finjus) vice president Serbio Tulio Castaños urged the population to be more active and demand that the government fight corruption. "We’re discussing the criminal code where corruption is clearly stipulated and there’s been no way for Congress to pass it."

He said the fight against corruption has failed because the country’s political system is based on cronyism.

For opposition PRD party lawmakers Ramon Bueno, Nelson Arroyo, Hugo Núñez and Jorge Frías, Reynoso’s statements show the "rampant corruption" within the PLD, which doesn’t want it uncovered.

Arroyo says the official should resign because it will be difficult to carry out her duty to fight corruption in the ruling party’s Administration.

Nuñez asks Reynoso to publicly denounce those who’ve been pressuring her, and said her security detail must be beefed up.

Meanwhile PRD party president Miguel Vargas agreed with Reynoso, noting that the same applies to a lack of public and legal security. "There’s still a need to articulate a strategy to develop a quality education system that effectively serves the personal realization of the people."
