Reporters Without Borders: Dominican Rep. must protect journalist now

Santo Domingo.- The organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on Tuesday called on Dominican authorities to provide "immediate protection" for newspaper ‘El Nacional’ journalist Pedro Fernández, who’s been "the target of two assassination attempts.”

"Pedro Fernández should immediately enjoy the protection of a personal guard. We urge the Dominican authorities to launch an investigation as soon as possible to find the perpetrators and masterminds," the head of RSF for the Americas, Camille Soulier said in a statement.

On June 30 Fernández was fired upon in the city of San Francisco de Macorís (northeast), just a week after another violent action against him.

The RSF added that the latest attack took place when the reporter was driving a car in the neighborhood Los Chiripos, known for the presence of drug pushers.
