Truckers’ spat again shutters Dominican-Haiti border

Santo Domingo.- Unidentified people placed two tractor trailers at the Dominican-Haitian border town of Jimaní Wednesday, to protest the Custom Agency’s halting of a truckload of illegal cigarettes from entering to the country.

The standoff led to chaos throughout the area, as vehicle traffic through the Jimani-Malpasse crossing has been halted.

A report on the El Zol radio program said the tractor trailers are blocking the Haiti side, while Barahona Police commander Maximo Baez headed the contingent of agents sent to the area to avert disturbances and restore traffic.

The spat came when Customs agents halted the a truck and seized the cigarettes, when the driver failed to produce the load’s documents

The incident is the latest in a string of skirmishes pitting truck drivers from both sides of the border, especially at Dajabon (northwest).
