Defense heightens alert at border on Haiti prison break

Santo Domingo.- Defense minister Sigfrido Pared on Monday said the major border crossings were placed under heightened alert to keep a group of Haitian fugitives from entering the country.

He said the Dominican Army is capable of providing security along the border with Haiti, whose authorities he affirms collaborate in the heels of the Sunday night break out of more than 200 fugitives from a prison northeast of Port au Prince.

Pared said the border security agents at the crossings in Pedernales, Dajabón, Jimaní and Elías Piña have photos of the most dangerous of the fugitives.

The official spoke after receiving a recognition for the armed forces’ support of the National Technical Professional Training Institute (Infotep).
