Pay up, go to impound....

Santo Domingo.- The Metropolitan Transit Authority (AMET) on Tuesday said it retained 1,036 autos on the roads including heavy vehicles on moving violations such as no lights, old tires and driving on the passing lane, as part of recent measures to prevent accidents.

AMET spokesman Roberto Lebrón said more than 600 motorcycles were impounded during the last few hours, for lacking license plates, registration, insurance and for driving without a license.

He said 116 vehicles were retained on the main highways on moving violations, while 571 truckers were ticketed for driving on the passing lane, one of the most dangerous practices on the country’s roads.

where was this ? They could confiscate thousands if they wanted to in every city or town in the Nation. A plate for a motorcycle is $35 which pays for a weeks food for a family. The should start at the dealers who sell new or resell motorcycles and cars to collect registration and plate money at the time of sale. Problem with that is many would pocket the money and say the plate is coming which does take months. Clean up Santiago I see the same dump truck missing it's hood and lights on the road every time I am there

Driving in the Dr is a suicidal experience, not sure how everyone survives the trip to work every day. But glad to see them pulling non roadworthy vehicles off the road. Bout time. Keep it up. Now also pull off the road those vehicles belching huge clouds of exhaust plumes from their defective diesels. Force them to fix them or lose the vehicle it will be scrapped at the owners expense

==========

It should NOT be the dealer's responsibility to collect registration and/or plate money at the time of sale.

Suppose they do, what's going to happen when the registration expire?.............are they suppose to be reminding the person to renew it?.

They are in the business of selling motorcycles/cars, not keeping track of who's renewing their registration.

Everyone knows that half the vehicles on the roads aren't road-worthy. If a third of them were taken off the roads, a third less fatalities, we would have. It's no mystery that the older and more dilapidated the car or bus is, the greater the danger of an accident.

With all the faulty vehicles competing for passengers and trying to get there first, it's no wonder we have the world's worse fatalities per mile.

I understand that many earn their living as "conchos", because its a job and there are few alternatives. Likely most would rather do something else, if there was something else to do.
Regardless, when the Metro is extended to the MegaCentro, Lots of drivers and their jalopies will have to run a different route. That stretch of road will become a lot safer and less polluted.

When mass transport finally becomes sane with many more Metro lines and modern buses, the death toll will surely decline exponentially. No doubt.

Never knew there was a passing lane in DR. I always saw trucks in the left lane.

What about the poor people who have no choice but to take these old wrecks to go to work and bring food on their table? DR is a country with much more freedom than the US and they should ensure that they don't become regimented, boring and zombies law-abiding freaks like the Americans... a message to all the Americans on this website: if you miss law enforcement (I don't) then maybe you should pack up and go back to the States where you're gonna get the government up your a** as much as you like and maybe leave the Dominican people alone. The author of this message is American.
