Dominican people’s ‘purest essence’ won War of Restoration

Santo Domingo.- President Danilo Medina affirmed Friday that the War of Restoration of the Republic is a milestone in Dominican history, to be celebrated tomorrow Saturday, August 16, the 151st anniversary of the Cry of Capotillo, which set forth the struggle.

Medina honored the war’s military and civilian heroes whose sacrifice restored the country’s freedom and sovereignty. “Those brave men who fought in the war gripped weapons and courageously confronted the Spanish army," that had ruled the fledgling Republic, annexed four years earlier.

He noted that the war that lasted over two years waged over most of the national territory between 1863 and 1865, "was one of the most glorious pages of our history, vowing to defend the national honor."

It sought to "reconquer our freedom, the first, the most precious of all the rights with which the Supreme creator bestowed on the universe."

Medina, quoting the writings of Professor Juan Bosch, the War of Restoration was represents the highest significance in the annals of the Dominican Republic, "because it was at the same time a war of national liberation and social war involving the purest essence of the Dominican people."
