Dominican Republic celebrates its second Independence.

Santo Domingo.- Today Saturday, Aug. 16, the Dominican Republic celebrates another year since the Restauracion of the Republic, waging a a guerrilla war from 1863 to 1865 against Spain, which had re-colonized it 17 years after its Independence.

The war ended with the Dominican victory and the withdrawal of Spanish forces from the national territory.

The Dominican Republic celebrates each 16 August as a national holiday, and marked also by the inaugural of the Dominican President every four years.

The ceremonies are held nationwide, centered at the Monument to the Heroes of the Restoration (El Monumento), in Santiago, site of the war’s most decisive battle.
