Traffic on southern highway restored after protest

San Cristobal, Dominican Republic.- Traffic on the southern highway has returned to normal after having been backed up for several hours by a protest staged by residents of the town of Doña Ana and other communities of San Cristobal, to demand street repairs and other grievances.

After a tense confrontation Police fired tear gas and fired rounds into the air to disperse the demonstrators, snarling traffic to and from Santo Domingo and the south region.

Residents hurled stones at police and also set tires on fire, to demand repairs on the roads that link the villages of Nizao, Doña Ana, Ingenio Nuevo, Najayo, Las Cabirmas, La Manigua and Los Leones.

Moreover, the protesters demand the completion of the public school now under construction.
