Strike shutters businesses, commute in eastern towns

Hato Mayor.-. Businessesshuttered and the Monday morning are nilin the eastern towns of Miches, El Seibo, Sabana de la Mar, El Valle and HatoMayor at the start of a 48 hour strike called by transport organizations and communitygroups which demand the construction of an aqueduct, road repairs and othergrievances.

The Santo Domingo StateUniversity (UASD) campus in Hato Mayor closed its doors as its students gather atthe city entrance waving banners and pickets.

The students demand theconstruction of the University City in Hato Mayor while the bus owners who play the route Sabana de la Mar-Bayaguana-ElPuerto transport groups want repairs of the roads leading to San Pedro deMacoris.

The Dominican Teachers Associationsupports the protest which has shuttered 113 public schools,.

Quoted by local media HatoMayor Transport Union (SITRAHAM) president Wendy Mercedes said the peaceful strikeis supported by over 50 organizations, including neighborhood boards and farmersassociations.
